I have a 1911 .45acp pistol that I'd like to replace the military style sights. It looks like having the front sight dovetailed in gives a few more options for buying replacements. Are these dovetails pretty standard in size? Do the vary from maker to maker or style?
Thanks for any information in helping me better understand what to get.

I usually measure the sight before cutting the dovetail. Some slides are a little on the hard side and it is best to use a carbide cutter.

I have had the slide work harden while drilling the holes for Millet front sights, the drill makes the initial impression then just quits drilling completely. I had to resort to a carbide end mill to continue.
