I have been processing a big bucket of range lead and have accumulated a good bit of jackets. I have read that most jackets are 95% copper and 5% zinc. My scrap yard buys it but processes it as dross so they pay a couple cents per pound. Not really worth separating from the actual dross. I know melting copper requires MAP gas, a furnace and a crucible and I have none of that. While it would be fun it isn’t very cost effective to buy all that just to make a couple 95% copper ingots. So aside from selling for scrap do you guys do anything interesting with them?

Our scrap yard paid for them as #2 Copper.
It was less than clean Copper, but well worth saving and cashing in.

How do you separate jackets from dross? If I can talk my scrap yard into #2 copper then I will be a happy guy!

One yard in my area will buy them for copper prices. But they have to be clean. To separate them from the other trash I use a skimmer and give them a good rattle, shake, ect. You had better run a magnet over them too!
