finally got some good results with my 25-20 Savage bolt action using the RCBS 90 gr cast boolit. I have tried different powders, 4227, Unique and 2400 in all kinds of varying weights and finally I think this load of 9 grains of 4227 is giving me the accuracy I am looking for. This was a 10 shot group at 50 yds.
the RCBS mold casts them at 90 grains / no gas check and my load is 9 grains of 4227
I sized only the bottom band at 0.258 and only lubricated the bottom groove. I did not crimp the cases. I used Lee dies.

Superb.

I had one of my Savages out for a little bit the other day and killed a couple of jackrabbits right before dark.

I am always surprised at how well .258 diameter bullets perform on small game even at fairly sedate velocity.

That bullet of yours (with nearly a caliber sized meplat) would/will be very effective on game.

Well done and good on you for not giving up on the rifle/cartridge.

There’s always a combination of components/technique (crimp/no crimp) that will work (so long as the barrel is not irretrievably damaged/compromised).

Well, let’s pray for a speedy recovery then!

Have you considered shooting from your other side in the meantime?

I have the 25-20 Win in a Contender 21” barrel and it loves 75 gr vmaxes and lil’gun. It eats squirrels at 75 yds like there is no tomorrow!

I have, but for the time being I believe it wise to stay on the good side of my wife. A dog got away from its owner and ran into my Ducati from the side. I may have seen a blur at the last micro second and then I was on the pavement. 3 broken ribs a collapsed left lung, and 6 days/5 nights in the hospital. Shoulder is banged up and perhaps not healing on its own. Have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon on the 27th. Hoping for the best. My riding days may be done at age 71.

tejano..
I'm 75 and still riding but less and less. the hazards on the road here are bad drivers, deer jumping out from the bushes, horses which bolt, and of course dogs.
good luck with your recovery. whatever you do take the recovery slow and easy.

Atr, are you using Imr4227 or H4227? Nice group! I’ve been using an 85 grain that looks similar in a Savage Model 23 and an 1894 Marlin.

Tejano, sorry to hear about your accident. I’ve decided to sell my bike until I get back to living in a less populated area and then I’ll look for another one. In the meantime I think my son and I may stick to riding four wheelers on the weekends.

I have been using IMR 4227...
I was also very careful to trim all the cases to length and when I belled the mouth of the case it was just enough to start the boolit. The primers were CCI small rifle.

just back from my place up in the North Central Cascade mountains WA.
took the rifle hunting ruffed grouse, but because the habitat was pretty much burned out from last years fire I could only find one grouse which I left alone.
however all was not lost because when I visited my favorite gun/pawn shop in Riverside WA., they had two old boxes of 25-20 86 gr. flat nose jacketed, Winchester brand and Remington brand, $22 bucks each so I grabbed both.
It was a good trip all around, especially interesting because there was a Cougar hanging around my place. I got a visit late at night on two separate occasions.
