I have an older box of .429, 140 gr cast lead boolits that I’m considering putting thru my 44-40 ‘92 clone. No revolver loads - just rifle.

“Cartridges of the World” lists 30 gr 2400 with a 140 gr pill but I’d rather use Reloder 7 because I have a lot more of that powder. Since 26 grs is listed for a 200 gr bullet, I’m extrapolating that 28-30 would fill the case and still be safe.

Has anyone used this light of a slug in a “strong action” 44-40 rifle?

Well, I tried 26 gr Rel 7 and they shot all over the place - more like patterns than groups. No pressure signs so I’ll try 28 and see if the groups shrink.

I think that I would try a faster burning powder. I use Bullseye for my round ball loads in my single shot 44-40. I use Unique for 180-240gr bullets. Because I have those powders- nothing against 2400 or Re7.

I’ll switch to something else if the 28 gr loads don’t do any better. I could try the 2400 load out of the CotW book but will probably stick with a faster powder.

RL 7 requires a heavy bullet to burn well in .44-40.. Very accurate with 215-240 grainers with 24.5 grains.

With round ball try 7 grains of BULLSEYE !

Concur with bullets that light in the 44-40....use Bullseye, Red Dot, 700X or similar. I use Bullseye or 700X with 200 - 240 gr cast for most all my 44-40 loads.
