This thing came from the same farm in Wisconsin as the Remington 511; apparently no one resembling a "gun guy" was around to rescue it...for years.
It's the one on the top.....
Winchester 12 gauge model 25- the solid frame model 12, basically.
I have sprayed it with Kroil to let it set for a month or so.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220829/ee32cc69823d402f3ec93372ec09666d.jpg

Ouch, indeed. I can see some sandblasting or bead blasting in the future.

On You tube I watch regular Anvil Mark Novak. Penn. Gunsmith who boils all rusty guns. They come out looking good.

Looks like a fun project! Block off a PVC tube. Fill it with vinegar and let the barrel soak off a couple of days along with all the other parts. You’ll have to re blue it but all the rust will be gone. Oxpho blue is my best friend. Wonder how far the farm was from me?

Used vinegar to remove rust from clevises, the pins were severely rusted in place. After a couple of days I was able to remove the pins although one of them was bent. An hour or so later the clevises had a layer of fine rust on them. Would be a good start on a rust blue finish. In other words, if you use vinegar use a base (caustic) solution or lots of water to remove the vinegar and immediately treat to stop rust, or watch closely as it rusts and boil it to turn the rust black as soon as you have an even layer of rust. Then card it and use some other rust bluing solution for more coats of rust and card, then boil again, card and oil.

Much respect for the Winchester m25. Still functional with a quarter cup of oily dirt inside! Nasty.
It's working it's way back to shooter grade, though.

You want to stop the rust in its tracks transmition fluid - ford - and scrub with Steel wool.

Cool project.

It reminds me of a .30-30 Marlin I got for $50.00 from an estate about 20 years ago.
I told the lady it was worth more, but that's all I had in my pocket. She was fine with it.

A guy bought it new, went hunting, never shot it, put it in a soft case- snow and all, came home, and stood it in the closet.
When he passed away, his widow wanted all the guns out of the house, and money was not a big consideration.
If you live in a million dollar house with a new Cadillac in the driveway, and want something done--
I guess a few hundred dollars one way or another isn't a big deal.

Several years later, after he'd passed away- it looked a lot like your shotgun.
I hacked around on it a fair amount, and except for the pits that were left, it came out OK.

Sell it to some bar as a wall hanger.

I nominate this as the best suggestion in the thread!

Actually, our friend was over the other day and asked me not to restore it, just clean it up to where it's safe to shoot and she will hang it over the mantle. I was glad to hear that, I didn't want to draw file the entire gun and lose that "character ".
I'll post an "after" pic when I get a chance.

Sell it to some bar as a wall hanger.

I do know a guy who "rescued" a bunch of bar wall hangers several years ago, old Suicide Specials that he rebuilt to firing status, work great.

I would like to see a before picture that is clear and in focus. In the original picture I can just barely tell it is a gun. Was the shovel used to dig it out of the ground?

But in real life it did not look any better, trust me. The sharpshooter only serves to block the trucks license plate......[emoji41]

So this is what it is. A working wall hanger that won’t sit there and rust(because it’s covered in Tru-oil).
It works like a model 12;perfectly.306758

I apologize for the sideways pic.

I'd not use vinegar as it can attack solid metal. I'd degrease it and use EvapoRust and let it soak for a couple of days. Use a toothbrush as needed after soaking. Should yield a rust free gun. May be pitted from the rust but the EvapoRust won't harm the steel. Finish as desired after that - Oxpho Blue, duracoat, etc.

Great job on the shotgun! It looks 100% better.
