I have the smaller pot, the "15" it is 500 watts. Works well for samller casts,
but when smelting large amounts of alloy mine is lacking due to small size. The 50 is much larger
and should be able to handle larger melts.
How many watts is the model 50?

1300 watts 115v

I just got back from plugging it in and it works fine. I gave him 80.00 for it

It sounds like a good find.

It weighs 50 lb. But it looks as though it will hold a lot of lead

How many watts is the model 50? I just found some specs on the Chromalox smelters. The model 15 will hold 18lb of lead the 25 will hold 34lb and the 50 will smelt 64lb

I think you did very well buying the Chromalox melting pot.

I think you did well. I have never heard of a Chromalox pot, but those RCBS ladles are going for close to $30 now.

Does it have a temperature adjustment?

RobP1

No adjustment, But the specs say it regulates to 750*

It should be no big deal to add an inline PID.

It should be no big deal to add an inline PID.That's a great idea. I'll look into it. I'm not much of an electrician but it shouldn't be that complicated.

Well I took the old cord and 2 prong plug off and put a new cord and 3 prong plug on and fired it up for a test run. threw a 5 lb ingot in and it took about 35 min for it to start melting. I think this is gonna work.

My pro melt will do 17lbs in that same time. 800 watt rating.

Do you have much experience with high temp appliances?

You must remember that this pot is made of cast iron, not a steel pot.
It takes some time to get to temperature.

I got it fired up and gonna run 25lb. in and make some 1lb ingots

Well the chromalox worked like a champ. My NOE analog thermometer was reading 730 degrees. I fluxed numerous times and scraped to get all the old crud out. I loaded 25lb. in and it wasn't even half full. I cast 21 1lb ingots and left 4lb in the pot. I'm pretty pleased with the 80.00 investment. Rob

If it self regulates at 730 degrees, and that is a good casting temp for your alloys, I wouldn't mess with putting a PID on it.

Robert Yeah it held that temp pretty well. Even with a couple of ingots thrown back in it was back up to temp in a matter of minutes.

Chromalox is still around, started over 100 years ago, now they make heaters for all sorts on processes. https://www.chromalox.com/ Don't see any lead pots listed though.

I’ve got an old gas fired plumber’s pot, but I would have been all over that one, especially at $80!!! Looks like yo made a great find.
