Project rifle for movie prop and shooting. Goal was to make an earlier version as was made from GEW 98. Starting receiver was a 1916 receiver with 1920 overstamp. Stock was a 98k style. Barrel was a nice bore 98k profile in 8mm. All other parts and pieces were mix of WWII and pre/post war.

Finished rifle

Stock was reconfigured to add finger grooves (along the lines of some GEW 98 or Standard Modell Mausers), a firing pin disassembly disc added, and relieved for the scope mount base. Stained with Fiebings Medium Brown dye and a couple of coats of boiled linseed oil. Still need to sight the scope in (repro ZF39 Zielvier). Scope mount was a repro Type 3 short side rail.

Very, very nice. Would like to know how it shoots.

You need to get a Sniper Style Safety from Gun Parts Corp.
I just built a sniper for someone out of a 24/47 Yugo and installed the sniper safety on it for him.
Sorry I can't post pictures.

The large sniper style safety wasn't used on the SSR rifles. It was developed and used on later sniper variants. I have one on a Long Side Rail 98k. The modified short safety (actually a unique factory made short safety) was used for the SSR.

Yes you are correct.
That is why I put that safety on the one I built.
It would be more like a post war Sniper from the Yugo conflicts.
But I go with function more than staying Historically Correct unless it truly is an original model rifle.

This rifle was built for an upcoming WWII movie, hence the desire to be historically correct. I agree that the larger safety is easier to use and would be more appropriate for a post-war build.
