View Full Version : I got my first .44 Special!

I got a Model 24-3 from a friend of mine today. I was on the fence between this gun and a somewhat worn nickel M29 4 inch. I decided on this one due to the fact that they're scarcer and I would load a M29 like a .44 Spl anyway, plus this gun is in practically new condition. I'll try to post some pics later.

So, here are the particulars. 4 inch Model 24-3 in excellent condition, with box, papers, and tools. Gun is in beautiful shape, box is a bit tattered, perhaps stored in a damp place. Slight rust on the corner clips. I also got a Bianchi thumbreak holster and a .30 caliber can of my friend's reloads (which I see as brass.) Although I trust my friend's reloading practices, I'll probably pull most of the ammo, dump the powder, salvage the bullets & brass, and reload it myself. The gun has a pair of rubber Hogues on it (he did not still have the original grips,) and the only modification was that my friend had the trigger narrowed and smoothed for DA work. Cost was $600.

I have a set of nice Ahrends that I was looking to buy an N frame to put on, and I have already acquired a target trigger (which is my preference anyhow.)

Like I said, I'll try to get some pics up later.

That's a sweet deal, and a nice gun to boot. I like the target trigger for single action work, but for double action nothing beats a narrow trigger with the edges of it rounded. Patiently awaiting pics...

Nice roscoe and IMO the better choice for the reasons you outlined.

Triggers are an interesting and personal choice. Personally, a smooth TT is the choice for me, had it done on all my custom pieces - left 'em wide but smooth.

Many happy years of shooting with your new 24-3. :)

Snapping Twig,

Me too. The trigger I got for it is a .400 wide, but I could only locate a serrated one. I will likely smooth it, as my other 2 S&Ws have .400 smooth triggers.

Pictures as soon as I can get to it!

You did WELL. the 24-3's and the stainless 624's are both tough to find. Great shooters and field guns.

And here's the Ahrends grips

I found one little rust spot when I removed the Hogues. Darn it!!

I think I did very well.

Alcohol the spot clean then cold blue it a few times back to back - should do the trick, you'll never know it was there.

patrickL;
Elmer has a smile for you! I love my 'N" frame .44 Specials and I bet that you will too.

I have standardized on the Skeeter load (7.5 grs of Unique behind a Lyman 429421 240-250 gr SWC).

I had the wide serrated trigger on my twenty-nine polished smooth and the edges rounded a bit . It worked well for both single action timed and rapid fire and for shock and awe at the IDPA shoots .

Since they quit making the twenty-nines I guess I'm glad I still got a six and a four inch .

Yes, I do. What were the specs on that bullet? Perhaps there's one for sale, or maybe we'll re-run?

I know you'll love it... I bought a 624 6" a couple of years ago, and wish I had a 4" to match it as an every day carry gun.
As much as I love my .45 LC Redhawks, the 624 is an awesome gun to shoot, and the Lyman 429421 mold is just as much fun to cast and load.

Happy Shootin'! -Tom

Patrick:
My understanding is old west bullet molds now has the cherry to cut this boolit in stock!

If you want one of these molds you simply contact Bernie at OWBM and as him how much and when you can get it! I believe there was a web link in the original thread so we could see some of Bernie's work. Check it out.

That's the only thing I miss with the Lee's! They don't do cherry's so every deal is a different iterpertation of a drawing sent in. With a Cherry on "file" it's pull and cut every one is the same, until the cherry wears out.

I shoot 240 and 255 grain lead in my 44 special and love the heck out of my N frame. Wished they would do another run on the 4 inch as I would really like to have one but someday I just might find one when I have money in my pocket.
