I guess that my friend thought that I need cardio draw filing workouts........
She presented me with this 511 Remington that sadly spent a few decades in the back floorboards of her foster dad's work truck.
The action still works and the bore cleaned up a whole lot better than I thought that it would!

Might start by soaking all metal in Evap O Rust. Will come out looking like dark parkerizing.

Draw file a little, then 180 grit shoeshine. Repeat till it looks suitable, then go to finer grits for the shoeshining. 320 grit can look pretty good but "to taste" is the best recommendation.

time for a barrel spinner and a band sander. By the time you get all the rust off it will probably be a pound lighter. Naval jelly would take some of it off.

Plenty of rust there... boil it, card it off and hand it back. :)

Goodness gracious, that’s almost a candidate for glass bead blasting! Low pressure, it will take off just the rust and leave a very smooth finish! That’s the roughest one I’ve seen in a while. Good luck and pleas post after pictures, please, sir!

I've been down the road you're lookin' down about half a dozen times and I'll never go down it again. There's going to be pitting everywhere and you'll have to take a lot off to get rid of it all. Odds are the bore is damaged more than you think so even if you clean everything else up it'll probably only shoot mediocre at best. Best of luck to you.

Unless there is a lot of sentimental value to your friend, I'm guessing you will end up with way more time and material cost than what the rifle is worth. I do understand doing a labor of love though.

This is for a dear friend of ours-so time and cost to me doesn't matter. Labor of love it is.
At least the bore is good. Offhand at ten yards it shoots better than I can hold it.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220729/ae4c38d1f974d6835823dcf31d37d214.jpg

I love projects like that.
My latest is a Rolling Block from Apex.
Still need some work on the sights, but other than that she's good.

I did one that was in a rifle case when the shingles blew off the roof in a hurricane, we had another hurricane so soon that it went unnoticed for a few months. it had the weave of the cloth from the inside of the gun case etched into the receiver barrel and magazine tube. I sand blasted it (not glass beads) twice and after that it was what it was. It got KG guncoat applied and baked. the bore was so dirty it was perfect when i cleaned it. My friend that gave it to me died of a heart attack a few years latter, and his son wanted it back, so back it went. It was a post 64 Winchester 94, and the most accurate one i have ever shot. Be patient with the 511 and it will be her treasure.

The Naval Jelly helped a lot. Miles to go, though.
From what I make out on the stamps, looks like it was made in May 1939?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220803/6a517145a2bf3645ea9762fdf4338d11.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220803/f27c3cfe91e90c4ede3dcd03769558fa.jpg

Filing. Sanding. Filing. Sanding. Rinse, Repeat.
I think I’ll take a break and refinish the stock.
Where’s that Easy Off at?

Did you ever think of using the electrolysis method for removing the rust? I’ve always wondered about it, but haven’t tried it yet.

It removes the rust but the pitting is still there. No way to get rid of that other than removing metal with files and sandpaper.

Electrolysis works well, I have used it a couple times!

Doesn't ook much worst than my Katrina guns and I have been able to clean them up, but I am installing new barrels!

Oven cleaner is great for removing years of Wisconsin dirt from the stock. The buttplate screws required some oomph to remove-they are so rotten that they're getting tossed.
I'm not shooting for factory new appearance; just a clean usable rifle. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220807/36cd7b6a9869eac2fa1de16cebdb3c5d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220807/03aa8a2f50227f2495d61167ad6e0f41.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220807/39b00d0faaa989d79d44dbf5ae8d883f.jpg

I got the oven cleaner tip from a guy at a gun show years ago. His milsurp rifles were always the cleanest ones. It removes cosmoline better and safer than the old paintbrush and gasoline method!

I used oven cleaner on my DCM Garand.
I then sanded to smooth it up and then BLO.

There's still some pepper, but I'm seeing some improvement on the action.
It'll be fun teaching her to shoot it; a 511 is what I learned with.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220808/f06cdb4aac045706e59b6b6abf4024cf.jpg

I search for rifles like that. Once in a while they are beyond repair, but it's surprising how many can be saved. Especially if you are not looking for a Turnbull Renovation kind of result. Time well spent.

Little by little. About an hour filing and sanding today. The trigger guard is going to meet Mr. Dremel,, the concave inner bow is a tuffy.
The stock is very dark walnut. A few more coats of Tru-oil and I'll call it good. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220812/86bbe86827d9fe1aa7b31cbe867b516c.jpg

I decided to brown it because it looks right for an older gun- and it covers the remaining spots better than cold blue. I left the bolt body peppered rather than reducing its diameter. It matches my 510s patina- sort of. Now it looks like a used 1939 model 511 instead of an abused 1939 model 511. Fortunately, it still shoots like a 511- even an unmarked one[emoji848]....
Our friend loves it. She squealed every time that she hit a Dr. Pepper can; 9 out of 12 times.
She's taking it with her to show it to the donor when she visits- He "won't get it back" she says!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220821/64cc4cbe8297fcd2d21e299a3e062f15.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220821/1c166ca8fbca6b51d3ff9f4260ffa9a2.jpg
