Well, I played with the "turning the .30-06 case down a tad in a lathe idea" idea this past weekend. I decided to start a new thread since this is not a .40 to .44 experiment though the spirit is the same and the earlier posts are there.
As you might expect, this idea worked. Attached are three pics. The parent case turned to .453". The case cut off to one inch. The bullet swaged in a Corbin point form die to .458.
I have loaded this into a 45-70 case. Not fired.
My little lathe has to be spinning pretty fast to get a smooth finish. This bullet is not as smooth as I'd like. The finished bullet looks remarkably like a loaded .45 ACP round.

I like it! I like the idea that you can make something totally different out of available materials. Youe right, it does look like a .45 ACP. Nice work.

Pete,

Look good! Could you lightly polish brass while in lathe? Fine sand paper, flitz works great, tumble it etc... Maybe even try cuting off longer than inch, would that allow you to form the brass further up the nose? Try cutting off the neck at the shoulder junction of the left over case and swaging that as the jacket with the shoulder end folding up to form the base. Sould work also.

Good shooting,
More later,

BT: I did use the shoulder end of the case to make a second bullet. That, of course, has a much smoother finish. I'm sure that I could polish the case while it is in the lathe - a sandpaper strip or a lathe file. Mostly, I wanted to see how much effort was involved. Like I wrote in an earlier post, you REALLY have to want to do this as the labor per bullet is "expensive".
I'm very curious about how they will shoot.

I turned the bases down on a bunch of 30/06 cases to make them into a rebated boat tail. From there you can cut off the upper portion of the case. Run the case into a jacket maker of some sort to bell out the body portion of it (I invision a jacket maker like the .22RF sets) run it through a lee push through sizer or whatever type of set up you think would work best and go from there with point forms. I've only prepped brass I don't have a top punch of any sort. Thats a lathe project for the future.
