Which Lyman 38 cal mold has 2 crimp grooves so 357 mag loads can be loaded in 38 Special brass?

And if you can find a Lyman (or Ideal if its old) 358-156 grab it even is its a one cavity mold. It is a very good bullet design-- one of the Ray Thompson classics (IIRC). I actually bought mine because I needed the handles-- didn't know anything about the mold. Now its the number one choice for both my 38 Special and my 357 Magnum.

I don't remember having much luck with it honestly. Otherwies I would use it more.

I've used it since the 1960's. My old Ruger NM Blackhawk will shoot a one whole group with it at 25yrds. With a charge of 2400 that can't be mentioned.

Maybe I need to bring it back out! I wonder what I was doing wrong with it?

I got mine many years ago after reading Skeeter" use of it with magnum 2400 loads in 38 SPL cases. Back then 357 Magnum brass was scarce and about the only way to get it was to buy factory ammo which was expensive then. I had lots of 38 SPL cases and shot a lot of that bullet over 2400 in two Ruger BHs and a Colt Trooper. Proved to be an excellent bullet over 2400 or Unique. I still have that mould and the 358156 is still my "go to" cast bullet for magnum 357s and +P 38 SPLs.

Does anyone make a good modern upgraded mold?

Find a used one on fleabay. The old ones are a whole lot better then anything made in this century.

The RCBS 38-162 SWC is a clone that works very well in my Rossi Carbine.

Noe makes one that you can order as a plain based. I dehorned one of mine and only use checks for top end loads. It is my Rossi 92's favorite bullet.

I load the Lyman 358156 boolet in both my 357 Mag revolvers. Magnum loads get crimped in the upper crimp groove in Magnum cases and lower velocity loads are crimped in 38 Special cases using the lower crimp groove. It also works in my 357 Magnum Marlin carbine loads with micr-groove rifling and my Marlin CBL ballard rifling with 24" octagon barrel. I love the gas check feature allowing high velocities in both rifle and handgun. My alloy makes a 164 grain boolet, lubed and checked. I have a plethora of 357 molds but if God allowed a better mold than the 358156, He kept it for himself.

One popped up in the Swappin and Selling section shortly after I posted this!

358156 has to be my favorite mold for my 38s. Shoots nice out of everything

I was always impressed with the versatility, by design or coincidence, that allowed Skeeter and others to make 357 mag rounds using 38 Spl cases and seating the 357156 bullet out one groove higher. I seldom used gas checks with mine and wondered about having the shoulder reamed out or later having one of the boutique makers make one to order w/o the GC groove.
