Cannon fuse!!!

I just thought I'd oughta have some of this stuff, and an easy GOOG revealed a site called Cannonfuse.com. Who'd have thought.

Well I ordered some up, and it came in about four days, USPS, and very reasonable. This stuff seems to be a great product, and burns totally submerged in water.

I used that kind of fuse to Proof Test barrels when I didn't want to build a cradle and lock to fire the test.

Not sure if it's the same quality, but Amazon sells cannon fuse also.

Can you buy fuse in different diameters I made a small canon for my son, but all the fuss seems to be the same diameter and is too large. For the time being we a just using a touch hole, but fuse is safer.

There are different sizes of fuse.
But you can look on YouTube and see how to make your own to fit what you need.
Sort of like the paper Firecracker fuses that are very thin

My little cannon uses 3/32 cannon fuse.
I wasn't going to get it out this Forth but when I crashed my neighbors Fourth of July party one of his guests remembered me from a couple years ago shooting my cannon.
I went back to the house and retrieved it along with fuse, powder, and paper towels for wadding.
You just can't beat commercial shellacked cannon fuse.
i cut up a bunch of 1-inch lengths for my little cannon.

I made a small cannon when I worked in a machine shop, and I would take it on my annual summer visit to Uncle Sam. At the end of the two weeks, we always had a party, and the loud booms just added to the festivities. Besides, I wasn't the only one with the cannon. Two other guys had cannons, too, mine was the smallest. Anyway, I bought some cannon fuse, but didn't know how long to use. First time, it was like 6" inches, lit it and ran off. Then waited, and waited, and then it went off. After a couple of attempts, I decided 6" fuse was simply too long. Eventually, I got down to 2", that gave me plenty of time to light it, and retreat to a reasonably safe distance. Another thing, I found out that using oily rags for wadding gave a sharper report than when using wadded up toilet tissue or paper towels. When I left the Guard, I left the cannon to a friend. When he retired, he passed it to someone else. BTw, I still have some of the fuse somewhere in my shop.

This canon is tiny. Maybe six inches long with a 3/8” bore. Not much louder than a 22Lr.
I’ve made a few in my life. Mostly 12-18” with a one inch bore. That’s enough to make a heck of a bang.
I made one for my bar in Alaska. Besides making a lot of noise with it, we used to talk girls out of their panties and use them for wading. Afterwards we would recover what was left and staple them to the ceiling of the bar. We got quite a collection that is still there today. Ah. The good old days.

back in the day, what type of cannon fuse did they use? tha stuff that is in museum's is rely thick & very black. not thin green shinny stuff that we use today.

I have seen antique fuses that looked like they were made from BP mixed with pine tar and coated onto a string.
Today's stuff is made from man made chemicals.

Before you use it, time it. That way you will know what the burn rate is and how long a fuse to use.

Start with the barrel wall thickness, add 3/4 of an inch to go into the powder column, and 2 inches sticking out the side. This is plenty from a safety standpoint; you don’t wanna run half way to Egypt before the bang!
With too long a fuse folks loose focus; begin looking around like (whad you do wrong) and miss the shot!

Someone allready mentioned Try a piece to see how it works, the new stuff is very reliable/repeatable.

Back in the day, they didn’t use fuses. They mostly just touched off power in the hole with something burning. No delay that way.
