I am ready to build a graphite tumbler. I think I have the tumbler figured out. I bought a pound of mocrofine graphite. How much graphite would I add to a given amount of #8 shot? How long do I tumble the shot? This is a first effort so I am quite in the dark for this part of shotmaking.

Try one teaspoon. Only.

Seriously.

A little goes a long, long way.

That's way too much graphite. The intent of the graphite is to prevent the lead shot from "Balling" togeather upon ignition, nothing more. I used to use one "one empty .22 LR case" full for every 25 lbs of shot, that is more than enough for the job.

I'm with RRR on the little goes a long way. I used to molly coat bullets and a 1/4 teaspoon was almost too much. That stuff spreads out quickly and lasts a long time. A cheap place to get graphite is at the farm implement dealer, I got a pound of it years ago and it will last me a lifetime. They sell it to put in grain seed drills to lube the equiptment. Good luck!
