44 mag CB loads with W296

I've been loading a Lyman 429421 cast from WW alloy with 2400 for years but 2400 hasn't shown up locally for over a year, and neither has Unique. Yesterday I found a 4 pound jug of W296 at the LGS so I grabbed it. My 2400 and Unique stash is down to roughly two pounds each so I'm tying to hold onto it as much as possible. My question is do any of you have any load advice for a 4 5/8" Ruger SBH using W296 and the #429421? Lyman Cast handbook shows 24-25 H110 so I'm thinking 23.5-25 W296.

I have used 296 in that charge range, with that same bullet, with good results, in the 29 S&W. Start low and work up.

I use 23.5 grains for that bullet, it works very well.

Those are the same identical powders, made in the same plant, one is badged Hodgdon, one is badged Winchester. Use the same data for both.

The general rule is don't download either one below the suggested (published) starting charge weight for the specific boolit.

Try 23.5 - 25 gr. Also use a magnum level primer. CCI 350s or WLP.

Not to get this thread off target but just got this mold last week. So do you guys just seat to the top ring? Going to powder coat some tomorrow.

I have shot quite a bit of W296/H110 in the 44 Mag with the 429421/H&G Keith bullets. Just seat and crimp in the crimp groove. Start a little low and work up to around 24 grains. I have used 25 at times but that was just me, not a recommendation. Somewhere between 23 to 24 you will find the sweet spot.

You are not going to get ANY load data that is written in stone regardless of who says one can. Lyman's latest cast bullet manual lists the 429421 245 gr "Keith" at 25 grains H110 as max.

Most Lyman 429421s (there have been several over the years) drop 245 - 255 gr bullets depending on the alloy. Other renditions of the "Keith" bullet are most often heavier with some upwards of 270+ gr. I've found 25 gr of H110 under the Lyman 429421 or the RCBS 44-250-KT at 252 - 255 gr, when pressure tested (Winchester cases, WLR primes), gives just under the SAAMI MAP of 36,000 psi. With the Lyman 429640 HP "Devastator" weighing 270 gr 23.5 gr of H110 (same lot) also runs just under the SAAMI MAP.

Yep, 245 grain and I'm using Winchester primers and Starline brass.

My favorite 44 magnum load.
I have shot thousands of this load over the years.

My mold drops a 255 grain 429421. 22.0 of 296 has done well for me in multiple revolvers. Standard primers.

i shot alot of H-110 in a ruger SA in 45 colt, useing a 255gr cast hard. i had to use a very good crimp.

Use a Magnum ( or winchester) primer and a FIRM ROLL CRIMP

I shot many kegs of 296 behind the 429421 in Silhouette. I shot a 7.5" Ruger Super B with 25/296/429421 cast 50/50 WW/Lino. The load was very accurate and averaged 1400fps.

At what speed would you need to consider using a gas check? And I ask from the point of ignorance, having never loaded anything faster than about 900-1000 fps with cast.

I have never seen a need for gas check bullets in a 44 Magnum when shooting 245 to 325 grain cast
bullets in the 44 Mag even at full power velocities. It comes down to who and what you want to believe. Some think they are pretty it seems to me.
I have a Lyman 429244 bullet but don't use it. PB in the 44 Mag for me.

Sounds good to me, now to score a 429421 mold that will drop hopefully on the large side .430 to .431 (Ruger SBH 7.5in barrel, .429 jacketed drop right through the cylinder)

I had .432 throats in mine. I "Beagled" my mould and sized to .433.
