A out to start reloading for my friends .270 weatherby Vanguard. Her dad passed earlier this year and now it's hers so I'm trying to fix it up so she can shoot it . Gonna copy her dads old loads but when I told her I might be able to cast for it make her reduced low recoil loads AND power coat them pink n purple and all that she was pretty excited about the idea lol. And the idea of outshooting grown men with pink bullets lol !
Any way anyone cast and power coat for .270 ? Probably just gonna be target shooting for the most part with these casts so don't really need any crazy velocity but still probably going to gas check anyway.
What's eveyone like ?

My 270 win is the only gun that I own that I do not cast for, but give it a try. It is the most accurate gun that I have.
I use a 150 grain nosler partition out to 500 yds.

Choice of powder for that huge case might be a problem. Guess Unique, power pistol and maybe 2400? Look for plinker 06 loads.

I use Ken Waters reduced velocity loads in my .270, H4198 and a 90gr or 100gr condom works great. Not much recoil either

.270 and 6.5 are the two calibers I DON’T cast for.

However, based on my experience casting for 7mm/.285” Im sure you’ll get equally good results.

I’d start with 10gr of Unique or 16.0gr of #2400.
Acc5744 aka Shooters World “Buffalo Rifle” will likely give you even better results.

I’d be sure to give the bore a good cleaning with a copper removing solvent, and shoot 50-100 rounds before checking accuracy.
Don’t expect cast bullets to shoot to same POI/POA as jacketed.

I've found casting for the skinny calibers is a chore. Have cast for a 6.5 jap and when the long for caliber skinnies come off the mold, they bend easily. Have to wait for them to cool a little before dropping them out. Then you end up with a "cooler" mold because the rhythm of the cast is slowed. I do want to try and cast for a .25-06 someday. I think it will require a rather stiff alloy. Let us know about your efforts.

Well based on 7×57 and 25-06' you'll need the top of the Unique loads to get little groups .

I ain't scared I cast 22,25,26,27, and 28 cal and have had good results with all of them .

In 27 cal I run a 6.8 SPCII with the NOE 279-124 at 130 gr ready to load lube and check up to about 2250 fps in a 20" gas and bolt gun with the 1-10 twist with 1.25 MOA most days with a load worked up for a 16" gas gun . Recoil is about the same as 357 mag rifle .

I don't shoot cast in my several 270 Winchester rifles but everything I have tried IMR4227 in has worked very well for me. I have published data for most any popular cartridge for it and as a matter of fact for IMR4198 also. If you would be interested in the data please PM me. I can send you photos of the data by text.
I'm thinking the pink and purple bullets will certainly get you some brownie points!
Good Luck,
Rick

My best friend and reloading buddy was a dyed in the wool 270 Winchester fan ... he believed that the sun rose and sat on the 270 ... I was a 30-06 Fan with a 1903-A3 Springfield and believed it to be the best rifle ever made .
For his 270 he had a RCBS boolit mould #270 - 150 - SP - GC , it's a 150 grain boolit but back then if you shot cast you tended to go heavier than the standard Jacketed loading of 130 grains .
With the 150 grain boolit : 22" bbl . Remington model 700 :

Pet Loads that Johnny liked in his 270 Winchester
Reduce max loads 10% and work up in your rifle
RCBS # 270 - 150 - Spire Point GC ... 150 grain weight

13.5 grs. Red Dot = 1593 fps (max load)..... book starting load - 11.0 grs. @1473 fps
27.0 grs. imr 4198 = 2039 fps (max load)..... book starting load - 25.0 grs. @ 1896 fps
34.0 grs. imr 3031 = 2009 fps (max Load)..... book starting load - 32 grs. @ 1888 fps

These 3 loads were his favorites , the Red Dot load was for fun and the other two were his hog and deer loads . That longish 150 gr. boolit at an honest 2000 fps would take deer cleanly and was deadly on a wild hog !

We didn't powder coat , RCBS Rifle Lube , cast of wheel weights ...both clip and stick on ...we just melted them all together and cast from that mix . Air Cooled and Would Size them .278"

Hope some of this helps .

I do not cast for the 270 Winchester but do cast 270 bullets for my 270 Max Pistol) and 270 IHMSA (Rifle). The 270 Max is a 357 Maximum necked down to 270 and the 270 IHMSA is basically a 300 Savage necked down to 270. I use only one bullet for the both of them and that is the RCBS .270-150-SP. I use XBR 2015 in the Max and 2400 in the IHMSA. I am getting 1850 FPS out of the IHMSA.

I cast for my 270 Savage which has a 1:10 twist Douglas barrel. The boolit is an older Lyman copy of the 311284 which has a 'bore riding nose' and when gas checked and powder coated, sized to 0.278"gives me exceptional accuracy. My powder of choice is 3031.

I'm going to assume you are talking about a 270 Winchester, not a 270 Weatherby Magnum and such. The 270 Win is to me a sleeper. I have taken deer over the last 2 years from 50 yards to 120 yards with cast boolits in this caliber. I absolutely love it. I shoot a Winchester Model 70 and a buddies Ruger American. Both rifles get the RCBS 270-150 lubed with WLL Carnuba Blue, any gas check available, and 10 grains of Red Dot. Each rifle shoots MOA for 5 shots to 100 yards. It's around 1400-1500fps. Soft shooting, low noise, low recoil. My barrel in the Winchester has seen more than 2000 of these rounds. If you need samples, I can send some. They are .279-.280 lubed and checked.

Have fun if you are wanting to stand them up for PCing. I used to PC 6.5mm. With the small gas check bases, they were a pain to keep from not falling over. I eventually went to Liquid Alox. If I were to start shooting that caliber a lot again, I would get a mold with a plain base, because I really like using PC.

I just loaded 30 test rounds in 270 Winchester with loads from the Lyman cast book. 700X with 13 grains, Red Dot with 10.5 grains (supposed to be most accurate load) and Green Dot with 11.5 grains. These are not max loads either. I am using the Lee mold that casts 135 grain boolit. I powder coated them and checked them also. I plan on testthem next week at fifty yards and then at 100 yards. These will be light recoil and fun to shoot. I’ll post results here when tested.

I have used the Lee 277-135-RF in a .270 Savage with good results. I used IMR4227, for the .270 Win, I would start around 15-20 grains. Even powder coated, you may want a gas check.

I also have loaded the Lee boolit. The 1/10 twists of each of the rifles that I cast and load for prefer the heavier RCBS boolits. However, the Lee boolit did shoot very well, it just would not cast over .277-.278. The throats will take just a bit more, which the RCBS could cast to .279-.280. Neither will take a PC'ed boolit though. The nose gets too fat to chamber and nose sizing for me is just too much when these rifles performed well enough with the traditionally lubed boolits.

Went to the range yesterday and tested the 700X, Green Dot and Red Dot loads. With the powder coated gas checked Lee 139 grain boolits they shot pretty good. The 700X was the first test (all shot at 100 yards) and after getting the scope adjusted it was so-so. I’ll try them again to see about better results, the other two grouped in at three inch circle. Eleven and half grains for Red and Green Dot for a nice mild load. They were grouping right but my main interest was grouping. Will do 50 yards next to dial scope in then back to 100 again.

If you want to powder coat the tall or the 22 cal boolits, stand them up in a silicone trivet. I have them in 22 (1/4 in) and in a 30 cal size. To get the proper size holes get the size from the description and count the number of holes in the picture. Divide the size by the number of holes. The ones that I bought at Amazon are no longer in stock, but there are others that will work.

I am shooting nothing but cast in my 1970 vintage Win Mod 70 270. It loves cast and is almost scary accurate given my old eyes and iron sights. It shoots well with many powders but I especially enjoy launching NOE 128's with Red Dot at about 1750 fps. I have not hunted with it - yet. What has also been especially pleasing has been the accuracy of the plain base boolits from the NOE mold (it is two cavity, one gas check and one plain base) at a velocity of 1400 fps with no leading.

I just started casting for the 270. some tumble lubed using alox and some powder coated 140gr/136gr bullets.
i have a batch of alox 140gr gc loaded to shoot ,up to max velocity. Ill post back when I get to shoot them

Not a 270 but i did buy a NOE mold to try some cast in my 6.8spc. With Hi-tek, horrible accuracy. With PC, decent 100y sub 3” groups. I think a harder alloy would give better accuracy at 2000fps.

I am just now starting to PC rifle boolits, I use one of those silicone ice cube trays that you can get off the internet that makes 3/8" ice cubes. You can stand up the boolits in the trays when you heat them and the silicone does not mar the PC. At least it didn't for the 308 boolits I did. Good luck and let us know how you do.
