Could not resist an offer of a GEW 98 action that comes with a set of bases and Sako 26mm ring mounts. The bolt handle has been bent down to clear a scope and I have a spare GEW98 8x57 barrel and Pecar 4x81 scope.

I have had great success with a M1904 and cast boolits so a new rifle with a scope......

Next project will be a new timber stock from camphor wood; should keep me busy during winter.

That looks like a great project.
Keep us informed as it progresses.

Is the base welded to the front ring? Sure looks like a thin weld bead on each side in the pictures.
Nice looking piece of wood. Is camphor a common wood for custom stocks over there?

Certainly the makings of a fine rifle. As the others have said, please take photos.

That's going to be very nice. The scope base does look like it has epoxy underneath. The trigger guard swivel is a neat feature if you have one or can find one.
Beautiful grain on that slab of camphor wood- does it smell like Campho- Phenique?[emoji848]

Camphor is noted as a 'weed' but readily available, have over 2 tons that has been drying for years. I use a lot of it for making jewel boxes.

Great progress on day one, did a "like for like" at the dealer saving the cost of a PTA. Got offered a ex-military 30.06 barrel from a WW2 FN conversion (if it is any good). Gave it a good scrub with Bisley bore solvent and steel wool and it comes up 9+/10. Pushing a tight patch through there was the constant pressure from end to end. Nice deep rifling that just kisses the bore riding nose of my favourite cast pill a Lyman 311284 that weighs 206.8gns with my alloy.

Already had a spare Pecar 4x81 Scope that fits in the Sako mounts perfectly and adequately clears the bolt handle.

Now for a stock?

Polished and re-blued the barrel today. Stripped all the old finish off and when back to bare metal, I heated the barrel with a propane torch then applied the cold blue solution. When that dried I again polished with OOO steel wool, heated again and applied a second coating.

A bit of oil and it presents as a professional job!

That’s a nice project. I could envy you for the wood you have stashed. With that wood a mannlicher stock would be awesome for that action. I still get moved in my heart at blued steel and nice grain wood!

Well my 'new' 30.06 is assembled, barreled action and stock arrived today. Assembled from bits & pieces that have been stored in the workshop and a (free) doner action, Sako mounts and a Pecar 4x81 scope with fine crosshairs. Total cost was under $200.

The FN Mauser barrel has nice deep rifling 1:10 twist and perfectly smooth and unblemished, should be a great cast bullet shooter!

That looks good- is the stock a converted milsurp one? Looks like good walnut. Are you still planning to make a camphor stock?

Still planning a "Delux" stock but the old mil-surp will suffice for range testing

First shots on range today, WOW just WOW. After bore sighting the Pecar scope 3 shots at 50yds was a neat clover leaf under an inch spread. After adjusting the scope the next 2 shots 2 " higher, were cutting each other.

Back to the reloading bench for more ammunition, my load of 218gn Lyman 311284 (sized 0.310") and 31.5gn of 3031 shows great potential. :guntootsmiley:

Not bad result for a restored 100yo Mauser action :Fire:
