Is it possible to change the 8 point crimp on a plastic hull to a 6 point? If so what is the best approach. I have some nice hulls with 8 point crimp but only a 6 point on the reloading press.
thanks

you can borrow a hair curler from a female acquaintance, use it to straighten the end and then you have "new" hulls.

Try loading without using the crimp starter at all.

Crimp starters are pretty easy to change on most presses. 1 snaps off and on.

if you have a mec change it to 8 point doesn't cost much but to me works better. I use both birdshot 8 point with used hulls; buckshot and slugs 6 point but with new hulls.

come down on the hull lightly see if it starts to form

do this 1st if ok then load as normal

BPI makes the "Spin Doctor" hull conditioner, don't know if that might solve your problem. Worth doing some reaserch.

Others have used a heatgun/hair dryer to heat shell and recrimp

try coming down slightly onto hull to see if it forms if so then load as normal

I use an old paper shell crimp starter and it works well for both 6 and 8 point crimps.

I have a Pacific DL105 with 8 pt and found a crimp starter for 6 pt. Much easier. What press do you have?

thanks for the replys. I have tried starting with existing 8 point and it works, marginally. I also tried heat at the crimp to try to straighten it out but was less successful.
the press I am using is a Herters press and it does great with 6 point crimps.
I may have found a 8 point crimp made by Ballistic Products which might fit the Herters press.
I don't know if Herters ever made a 8 point crimp for their presses.

Which model. Herters made clones of mec 400s so parts are interchangeable

Easy way, get an 8-point starter. No mention of what press. I use what starter is needed. Why not just use the one for the shells?

The Herter's model press I am using is a 7-64-N72M

I just tried a few hulls with 8 point crimp and changed them to 6 point.
Mounted a heat gun in vice put on low setting, then slipped a 12g hull over a empty 50 cal BMG brass and spun it around smoothing out the crimp with fingers.Worked like a charm.

Seems like the thickness of the hull is a factor, and let the plastic cool down before you slowly lower the crimp starter down.

I tried it last night and Jim's technique worked well, much better than what I was doing before. It takes a little time but what the heck!

Eh, no matter what you do, it will be ugly and inconsistent on crimp pressure.
