I have a fair bit of IMR 4895 surplus powder.
I would like to use it in a Marlin 95 with microgroove rifling using 300-405 gr cast bullets.
I saw a few posts from a few years back with kind of mixed opinions.
Anybody have any experience doing this lately?

Data sounded excellant, but my load kicked too much harder for the little velocity gain. Your shoulder may vary GW

I use 4895 for my Ruger #1 in 45-70 and a 420 grain patched bullet with good results. They’re on the stout side at 1850 f/s but doable in your Marlin

It depends on how fast you want to push your bullets, and what weight. It's far too slow a powder for the loads and velocities I shoot.

Elmer Kieth has a load using 4895 with the Lyman Gould 457122 bullet. I use it in my Browning 1886 with very good results. It gives me just under 1700 fps out of the 26 inch barrelled 1886. Of course I paper patch the Gould bullet and have no issues with leading.

With milsurp 4895 it takes at least a 400 gr bullet at 1500 fps (42-45 gr) to get the 4895 to burn efficiently. It takes a certain amount of psi for that. Less than 400 gr cast bullets just don't have the mass unless the load is top end and uncomfortable. I also suggest a dacron filler be used.
