Remington 1889 10 gauge

Found one in a LGS in Northern Minnesota. It was on display for about an hour. I had headed for a pawn shop to poke around and ended up parking near a gun shop. I thought great, 2 look arounds for one stop! Never been to either one before.
I've been on hunt for an old double and been searching the web for gun shops and calling them with in a 2-3 hour drive and not having any luck except for the other 1889 that had cracked stocks and cost more than this one. This shop was not on the radar at all.

So here it is... I guess there isn't much info on these having nickel plating? It locks tight and I fired a couple 1 3/8 oz loads of 6 shot with 29 grains of Longshot from Seyfried's article but he listed 1 1/4 oz. Both chokes measure .750

Dang! That one is in good shape. I had one in 12 ga but it had a lot of issues. I eventually traded it off.

One hammer was mismatched off some other gun, the forearm was missing (iron and wood), and the rib had broken away at the end of the barrels at some point so somebody had done a mediocre job of soldering everything back together. It had also been shot a lot so the action was loose. If I remember correctly, it had 32” barrels with full chokes. The only thing in good shape was the stock.

The other 1889 had big cracks in both stocks. I'm not collecting these but was looking for a 10 gauge from the time when before 12 gauges took over with 3 inch magnum shells.

Reviving an older thread because I also own an 1889. Leafing through Charles Semmer’s book on Remington doubles I can find no reference to factory chromed 1889s. Yours seems to be a Grade I with an early fluid steel barrel. I suspect the action has been refinished. Mine is a 12 gauge Grade II with twist steel barrels, so I limit it to very low pressure loads in all-brass cases. Ross Siegfried published an article in Handloader many years ago that served as a starting point. Pressure testing was always done with a very long string due to the twist barrels. Semmer’s book has approximate dates of manufacture listed by serial number if that interests you.

very nice I have one just like, not chromed. It is a safe queen. On the bucket list is some Turkey hunting with all black loads. I have all the stuff except good recipes. I don't know much ( anything) about proper wads etc.

Thanks, I have a lot fun with it. I also used it on a rabbit last week. I aimed high so it wasn't too shot up.

In the fall turkey season goes through October and either sex is legal. I got him on a spot and stock. He was on the edge of a small stand of pines in the grass. He was there with about 8 - 10 other jakes and hens. I seen them from house and figured they were going west along the south end of the recently combined soy bean field.

I grabbed the sxs and 3 shells it was that load with Longshot powder and SP10 wads. It's on the low pressure side but has a fairly clean burn. 1 ounce seems too light with a dirty bore.

The intent was to meet them at the south west corner of the bean field and I had to sneak the back way around the farm buildings but they still saw me in the first part of my move. When I was near to the ambush spot I was crawling on a deer trail on my hands and knees keeping on hand up for the shotgun.

They beat me there and I assumed they were out of the area but I waited about 15 minutes a headed out moving north along the west side of the field. Maybe these young turkey's don't quite know what to do but I was able spot them and got a 30 yard shot through a mix of brush and grass. After watching the flock file out of there one at a time and running up the field I went in there and found the jake standing and took a careful 6 or 7 yard shot knowing that the pattern would be really small. Got some tasty young turkey to show for it :-P

Did you pattern it or just go straight to shooting?

I have never counted pellet strikes and pretty much went to shooting it. But that load is good for about 40 yards.

produced over two decades before 1898 - legal by federal regulations , but not under some state laws - plus barrel length is over 18" which is Federal regulation for shotguns + most states compliant -
