I have an origional winnie 1895 if 30-40 krag. Barrel mounted sight went awol sometime during its life. Am planning to have a receiver mounted sight installed. Has anyone any idea of how high the front sight blade should be?. The origional sight blade is missing and instead what appears to be a silver dime filed to fit the integral
sight ramp. Thanks, Frank

Brownell's catalogue used to have a formula to calculate the height of front and rear sights.

Somebody is making a repro of the old Lyman 95 recvr sight. Just saw it someplace the other day.

Providence Tool has a model #21. I would have one on my Browning 95 if they had drilled
the reciever. Need to get that done RSN.

Thanks guys. Have seen the providence tool version of the model 21 rear sight. Wish I could afford it. Was reading strobel's old sight book. For the 1895 muskets they did list the 1901 krag sight as being available. HMMMM, wonder if the hole spacing on my src is the same???. They also listed a .326" height but that was again for the musket. Gotta do some more digging. Heck, worse comes to worse, will file one outta some brass or steel, make it higher than it needs to be and adjust when shooting. This will be for cast boolits only. Frank

both of my 1895's with 24" barrels (30-40 Krag, 405WCF) the sight height is the same at .375". that height works with the std. semi buckhorn or the Lyman 21.

I put the BuffaloArms sight on my 405 and had to have a higher front sight installed to get it down to the target @ 100 yds. I don't know if this is true of the original, but on my sight I can't get it all the way down because the lateral adjusting wheel rides on the receiver. When it's all the way down you re-adjust the horizontal every time you work the lever! Took me a couple shots to figure that one out.

My winnie was made in 1915 and has the ramp machined as part of the barrel. So when figuring the height of the blade that goes into the slot, does that count as the total height or just the blade height?. Thanks, Frank
