Traditions Hawken Kit

Managed to pick up the last Hawken kit at Fleet Farm in Rapid City in February. Was able to get started on it a week or so ago and finished it up today. So far, so good.

Test fitting parts and pieces...

After flaming, staining, linseed oiling stock then adding tacks and browning all steel and antiquing brass parts. I did change out the included front and rear sights to make more fur trapper period looking.

Still have to take out and test fire and finish adjusting iron sights. Need to put together some percussion caps using Sharpshooter 22 cap maker.

Good job! That's a great looking rifle. It has that original look to it. I finished up my Kentucky rifle kit a month or so ago. That was my first kit. It is a really good feeling when all your work comes together and your done. I just sat and looked at it for awhile. Enjoy shooting it!

Thanks! My first attempt at tacks on a stock. I've got some flintlocks to put together and may do some tacks on one of them also. Also have some inlays to consider - hunters stars, diamonds, etc.

Looks good!! I tacked one up a couple of decades ago, only to figure out that they were EXACTLY where my skin frequently touched it - not a brilliant plan!!

I have built Two Traditions kits so far.
One was a Saint Lewis Hawken and the other is a 32 Crockett Rifle for my wife.
On the Hawken , I did Lichtenberg Fractural Burning on the stock.
It looks like lightning bolts all over the stock.
On my Wife's rifle , I put on Brass Dragonfly's and added a brass patch box with another Dragonfly on the lid because Dragonfly's are some kind of thing in her side of the family.
I bought 1/4" silver tacks to add to the stocks.
But both stocks looked so good without the studs , we decided to hold off putting them on.
But your stock has sparked another motivation for me to put them on maybe a Renagade that I am Rebuilding that has a plain dark walnut stock.
I love dressing up these ML stocks.
Maybe I need to learn to do wood carving next.

I've thought about trying some silver wire inlay at some point but don't know that I have the skills required for that. Sounds like you have some good projects going also.

I have played with the Silver Wire inlays on little crafts for my wife, but not on a gunstock Yet.
I want to get good before I do a rifle.
I have a wooden Lazy Susan that my wife would like a Dragonfly inletted with copper wire for the kitchen table.
It will be good practice , and keep the wife and her daughters happy.
