This one has been on my bucket list for a long time and to say I am excited is an understatement. David Clements quit making them and is retiring now anyway so I have been searching for a used one I could afford. It is a stainless Ruger Old Army with 6 1/2” octagon barrel in .50 caliber with an oversized 5 shot cylinder
I have ordered an accurate molds 250 gr conical mold and I am going to put a Ronnie Wells bras Bisley grip frame on it with some nice walnut grips

That’s one of the prettiest wheel guns I’ve ever seen. Hope it shoots as good as it looks!

When I was at Ruger we produced an experimental .50 cal. Buffalo Special using a .357 Maximum frame with larger frame opening and longer cylinder. Frame width at front was wider to permit a larger barrel thread diameter. Barrel was turned down from .50 BMG blank. Cylinder held 60 grains of 3Fg Goex and gave 855 fps with 370-grain Maxi-ball from 7-1/2" barrel. Never went into production, but Bob Milek and I killed boar and Eli with it.

That is awesome! These are the loads David sent me on it:

Load data:
.490 roundball seated over a .50 cal. Wonderwad 50 grains by volume of Hodgdon’s Triple 7 FFFg 1250 fps
250 gr. cast bullet 45-48 grains by volume of Hodgdon’s Triple 7 FFFg 1150 fps

Too bad that never made it into production.

In days of old the Walker had the prize for velocity - a tranter 577 would have had to be up there for knockdown at close range?

My lust for a cap & ball revolver has sort of come and gone. But that is the one I always dreamed of getting.

I always wanted a stainless Old Army, and with prices going up and up, will probably never get one...but that 50BP engraved one has officially become the Grail Gun. :D

That is the percussion equivalent to Elmer Keith’s Number 5 Colt, perfection.

Same here. When I was a kid, someone showed up at the range with a 44 BP wheelgun and I was in love at the start.

Still haven't bought one but it's still kinda on the bucket list.

Gorgeous. I wish ruger would bring these back. I know they won't, but it'd be nice.

They are truly the Cadillac of cap and ball revolvers, I have 2 myself. Wouldn't part with them for all the tea in China. One is a stainless fixed sight that I got at an estate sale, the other was a basket case that took some effort to revive. Both are great shooters.

I would love a 50 cal percussion revolver. Very nice.

In the 70's I read an article in some gun magazine about the mid 1800's .58 caliber percussion revolvers that had been made in England. And drooled. Still waiting on someone to market productions!

Nice, very nice. I would not call it the ultimate but still a treasure. I want a Remington rider. I am over bigger is better.

I soooo wish Ruger would re-introduce the Old Army. I like the Remingtons in both calibers, the .36 for its economy and the .44 for power. I also wondered about mounting a .429 groove barrel and reaming the chambers on a .36 cal cylinder to get properly dimensioned chambers for correct chamber/bore relationship to shoot my favorite boolits.

Imagine what that Clements .50 could do with a 250gr soft lead HP and a snoot full of 777. I expect it would be nicely manageable and amply authoritative.

Ruger Old Army shoots very nicely with a 200 grain .452 conical. I had a box full of semi wad cutters for my 1911 that wouldn't feed. I did a neat thing of knurling the bullets between a couple of double cut files to make the fit the chambers. Accuracy is excellent. My best shot was dropping a jackrabbit at around 70 yards.
