What the heck? I just saw this tube video talking about Vista outdoors not offering any primers to the public in 2022?

Well, better sit on mine for forever!

What he said, if is is more than BS, is no New Orders. I am sure all the distributors have standing orders waiting to be filled.

In times like these, it is always nice to have another hobby or two like I do.

Primers will come back.............someday...............but not at the low prices I paid several years ago when stocking up.

Biggest surprise was I had 17 CCI450's fail to fire, so I emailed CCI and they answered back. Told me it was my fault of course but I told them I was not upset just surprised they answered email. Think they thought I kidding when I told him that was only 17 out of 24,537 CCI primer I have used.

A friend in the business said this is not unusual.. Apparently, there has always been (definition of always/every year, etc) a point at which the primer manufactures said they are not taking any new orders which really means, they have a limited production ability and there is no sense taking orders for products they cannot produce both this year and in years past and they are going to make what they can make and go from there.

With all the ammunition Slo-Joe is sending Ukraine, I would be surprised if that is where all production is going now.

I wouldn't get too worried just yet. I don't think anyone has said outright no primers this year, only no plans to take orders for reloading primers until further notice. They apparently are hurting pretty bad to keep up with loaded ammo demands.

Almar I am going to look into trying that. I’m convinced the days of easily getting supplies is DONE. I’m not conspiratorial, I’m a realist. The reality is we have a uniparty ruling us- if we didn’t , that last election would have had much deeper official investigations. A smart man will not only learn to make do, he’d be wise to not burn thru everything he’s got. Also, besides all the ammo sent to Ukraine I heard a podcast stating that the US is far down on ALL munitions, from small arms to the big stuff. They’re draining our strategic oil reserves and sharing with Europe and at the same time closing down pipelines and new drilling. No oil, no chemicals to make this stuff, or prices $$$$$$. Already shortages on oil base fertilizers around the world and here. Just saying.

I got a reply from a post on Expansion Industries page on Facebook that said that they should have primers by the summer!
Light at the end of the tunnel?
One place is accepting orders for their primers at $100 per thousand!

I was at fleet farm a week ago. They had four bricks of federal gold metal match AR small rifle pistol primers. They were selling them for $8.99 per 100. Ordered a few bricks of these a couple of years ago for $36.99 ea so I’m good on them. They also had some generic looking military type small rifle primers. They had 400 off them for $10.99 per 100. I didn’t need any primers and was just there to buy a couple boxes of loaded 10mm ammo. Weren’t to bad on ammo. I bought some FGI brass case, large pistol primer ammo. Boxes of 50 loaded with 180 grain HPs for $39.99 ea. They also had cheaper boxes of 50 in FMJ for $30.99 ea but we’re small pistol primered brass cases. I have plenty of large pistol primers but only a brick of small so Spending an extra $9 a box was a no brainer. When prices start going back to normal I’ll make sure not to buy from the places that are currently gouging. I’m sure the new normal price from here on out isn’t going to be a $100 plus per brick. My guess is we will keep have supply shortages till the next election. If so I don’t need to probably buy any primers in my lifetime accept maybe for small pistol in years to come.

A buddy called me from Arkansas this morning from a gun store. He said that they had Large Pistol primers for $8.99/100 limit three. I said sure, I'll take three.
My wife and I are eating alligator and shrimp tonight at a similar cost.
I'll still have the primers tomorrow!

I was at sportsman warehouse in rocklin Ca on Tuesday, they had Winchester lp, sp and #34 primers, enough to fill the bed of a truck. It was a good thing to see. Prices were not posted, they were behind the gun counter. It looked like a feeding frenzy. I didn’t ask the price.

A local reloading supplier here in Mississippi got in 40,000 cheditte 209 primers two days ago and is selling them $63 / 1,000 or $300 per sleeve (5,000). I went to buy 5,000 but thought they were Winchester. Since they were not I had to pass but got #8 Winchester 296 for $240+tax and a bag of 6 shot for squirrel loads.

Oh well, it's gonna be too hot to shoot outside soon. On the day's it's not to hot it'll be raining. If it's not raining the wind will be blowing. If it's not to hot, wet or windy it'll be cold. So, may as well wait until 2023 anyway. :violin:

I live in southwestern Illinois… near St. Louis.

That means I am close to East Alton, IL which is where Olin/Winchester is head quartered at.

All the local gun stores are telling me the same thing: “Don’t expect any primers until 2023.”

Which is their interpretation of Olin saying “We are NOT taking any new orders this year.”

That is basically what Federal /CCI/Remington/Vista said. Vista is the parent company of those other 3.

I keep noticing that the primers that aren't in stock keep going up in price, if I didn't have any on the shelf I'd advertise them cheaper than those guys.

I have a shoe box full of primers, in their boxes, so not that many.
When I use those up, my back up is a 20mm Army can full, in their original packaging.
When those are gone, I start reloading primers, which I have squirreled away all the reagents and lab equipment to do so.
If I don't live that long, someone is going to say, "What the hell is this stuff anyway?"

WWWWwwwweeeeellll….Gee!

I just found something out yesterday.

The Winchester/Olin plant in Oxford, Mississippi got awarded a pistol ammo contract for the Army for $145 million:

https://www.shootingillustrated.com/content/winchester-awarded-u-s-army-pistol-ammo-contract/

That includes 9mm, .38 Special, and .45 ACP.
:-?
Ooookkkkaaaayyy….

So who in the US military still uses .38 Special?

So much for seeing small pistol primers on the shelves any time soon.

And a good chunk of large pistol primers will get used up making those .45’s.

So who in the US military still uses .38 Special?
.

Flight crews.
An Alum. frame .38 is part of their survival gear when flying missions over 'Indian Country'.

It is also the TO weapon for pilots and other 'flying Officers' instead of a 9mm or a 1911 .45.
They have to qualify with it, and it is what they draw instead of a semi-auto
whenever their duties call for wearing a service weapon.

Depending on where you are, you'll also see a lot of Air Force MPs with a revolver.

I was commissioned, but never flew in the Air Force ( thanks Democrats for slashing the military budget in the early 1990’s…thanks a lot!)

I was issued a Beretta 92FS (aka the M9). The fliers I knew were also issued Beretta M9’s.

While I was in, it was called the “Security Police”. At some time, maybe in 2000’s it was changed to “Security Forces”.

Which is confusing on the internet to try to talk about say Army SF….which is Special Forces.

As you probably know, the Air Force has its own “special operations forces”. They usually start out as Combat Controllers (CCT’s), Para Rescue (PJ’s), and Tactical Air Control Party (Air Force guys on the ground who designate targets for planes to strike aka “tack-pees”). The cream of the crop guys from those career fields can then get “funneled” to the Air Force Special Tactics Squadrons (STS).

The cream of the crop from the STS’s then get “farmed out” to other units that we have never heard of….will never hear of.

For our guys, it was sort of a personal choice.
The survival vests were made to hold a GI issue revolver, but nobody said anything if they chose something else.
For helo drivers, it was no big deal, but there were warnings about what the additional weight of a heavy auto.
would do during an ejection, especially at high speed.
