I have heard for years that it is possible to load 30-30 Winchester with unique powder.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can find this data.
I want to make some gallery rounds for my grandaughter to shoot
110 gr projectile
Or 150 gr projectile.

Yes...I can help. I regularly shoot Unique in the 30-30 with a 120 grain lead cast bullet. I call then "Cat Sneeze Loads" as they have very little recoil and are a "hoot the shoot". They would be great for introducing someone to the 30-30. The bullet is a cast bullet (without a gas check) and was originally designed to be used in the M1 .30 Carbine (Bullet #311441). As for a published load, I got mine out of a republished older (1973) edition of a "Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook" (page 84). The range for a 120 grain bullet is from 7.5 grains of Unique to 11 grains. I used 8 to 9 grains. Try it! You like it!

Go to GMDR.COM. Click on Oregon Trail data. You can use the 170 gr Unique data with any weight boolit.

buddha1percent1,
Google search Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd Edition. You will find a pdf format of this book showing the information that you request.

And the regular Lyman manuals always list a handful of loads for the faster pistol/shotshell powder, but always for cast Boolits.

Back in my lever action silhouette days, I loaded and shot hundreds, if not thousands of 311-245 93 grain rnfp and 311-316 GC fn boolits over 8 grains of Unique for 50 yard chicken shooting. The Lee 314-90 SWC also works great. Cast the boolits a bit on the hard side, size 'em .311 and blaze away.

What do you base this on?

I need to be trying this. ive been loading 30-30 with right around 18-22 or23 grains 4198 since I started casting for 30-30. I like the idea of cutting powder use in 1/2.
no dacron fluff needed I'm assuming

I like 9.5grs of Unique with the C309113F Lee bullet. Easy shooting and accurate.

Here are the 30-30 cast boolit loads my daughter loves to shoot .
She has taken these and now my model 94 Winchester is her's ... she kept it in her room and put the targets on her walls .
These come from RCBS Cast Bullet Manual #1

115 gr cast bullet w/ gas check ... Lee , Lyman or RCBS moulds
Unique : starting - 9.0 grs. @ 1494 fps /// Maximum - 11.0 grs. @ 1818 fps

(My Pet Load - 10.0 grs. Unique @ 1656 fps. - very accurate )

150 gr. cast flat nose w/ gas check ... Lee , lyman or RCBS mould .
Unique : starting - 10.0 grs @ 1577 fps /// Maximum - 12.0 grs @ 1697 fps .

(My Pet Loads - 11.0 grs Unique @ 1637 fps - is most accurate
- 10.0 grs Unique @ 1577 fps - when I dont want to readjust my measure )

( My pet Load with a 170 gr. cast Lee or Lyman flat point with GC is 10.0 grs. Unique @ 1568 fps )

10.0 grains of Unique has a lot of uses in cast boolit loads

Have fun shooting with your granddaughter , make some lifelong memories !

10 gr. Unique under a Lyman 311291 at 170 gr clocks 1500fps out of my 14" Contender.
It is a very accurate and pleasant load to shoot for children and women.

Unique works great in most any cast rifle load. I suggest that you experiment with ladder loads if you are also after getting best accuracy. Different rifles of the same model and different bullets of the same weight can like slightly different load weights.

I have been using a T/C blackpowder push button powder measure to load nice low recoil loads in 44-40, 30-30,30-40, 30-06 & 38-55. I also use it for the .41 magnum, but those are medium recoil.
It dispenses 9 grs of Unique.
It's the Easy button.

I "think" this is one of those stories that started around the idea that Unique starts having pressure spikes if loaded above 10 grains in rifle cases. However, I reserve the right to be full of crap. If Larry Gibson happens to weigh in, he pretty much has the data to back up any pressure/powder claim out there. For my part, I've used Unique in everything from 22 Hornet to 50-70 Government and never had a lick of problems. I'm going to peruse Lyman's 50th and verify what calibers where Unique isn't recommended. I'm betting that list will be a short one.

10 grains of Unique is about the top charge most recommend for the 30-30 as far as my memory goes. With the light bullets I would rather have a 5 to 6 grain charge of Red Dot, or maybe about 5 grains of Bullseye. As mentioned above I'm sure Larry has worked the spectrum with Unique and will have suggestions.
Good Luck,
Rick

What is your reasoning for this response?

To the OP…. I have loaded many 30-30 with 115gn CBs over 6gn-9gns of Unique powder. These were mainly for dad to shoot when he could no longer handle the recoil of full power rounds. These rounds have very little recoil, you can reload the brass over, and over and over. I have loaded the same brass cases so many times I lost count. They are very cheap to shoot. You can harvest small game and it does not destroy any meat. I do not use any case filler. Never had a problem. I enjoy loading and shooting them ALMOST as much as dad does. It’s a great load for young shooters as well as aging shooters too. Have fun.
