He did comment on the wind the day he was shooting.

That's a very nice group and it reflects some excellent craftsmanship. About a decade ago I was making barrels for scratch built clones of the Ruger 10-22 that I use for varminting. I made the barrels from 7075 Aluminum with a Redman barrel liner. These were chambered with a Bentz reamer and generally shoot a 3/4" group at 50 yards with most kinds of ammo. From the perspective of having made 22lr barrels using liners I can appreciate the skill that went into making a barrel that can shoot such a small group. That's outstanding work!

I have had a few customers that like the 10-22 and had me thread the action and install a high grade barrel. I never saw the groups but was told that if they were over 1/4" at a hundred yards they were not happy. I can't imagine a group size that small at that distance with a 22LR. I did see a 1/2" group with a 50 BMG at that distance ( center to center), but the gun weighed 165 pounds.

John,

Would you be willing to share the brand of liner you used for this project? I know the skill of the installer is a big factor, but that has to be a high quality liner as well.

Thanks ~ Froggie

I have been using T.J.'s for over 20 years. These liners are hammer forged and Redman are button rifled. The hammer forge supposedly makes them a bit harder and they seem to be much smoother meaning less chance of leading. Plus there is a large selection of calibers.

Thank you sir. That confirms my previous findings. “Back in the day” some folks claimed a good liner properly installed would regularly outshoot the best factory original barrels. Likely semi-mythical, but indicative that we’ll lined barrels could shoot well.

Froggie

I made the barrels from 7075 Aluminum with a Redman barrel liner.

If you don't mind me asking, what did you use to fasten the liner into the barrel?

I have been using 262 Loctite. Probably because that's what I had at the time I started putting in liners.

Thank you for that info. I started out soldering them in, but what a chore. And if not careful can damage the bluing. I just recently re-did a MK-II with a 4" or so barrel. New liner went in same as you are using, 262 red high strength loctite.

Been looking at the 272 as it handles higher temperatures. But it is pricey.

And yes, they do shoot well.
