I've been casting for many very old cartridges like 25-25 Stevens, 38-35 Stevens, 25-20 S.S., etc. I find most old references state a 30:1 mix recommended. Is this just "old" thinking, or is there a reason for such a soft bullet?

It may be old thinking, but old thinking is often correct. Plain base cast bullets shot at black powder velocities most often will do their best with softer alloys, like 30:1.
