I would have bought it for $125 in a heart beat. That is going to make a heck of a goose gun.

It was probably only shot once :)

You might want to look at the recoil reducing system that goes in the stock of a Handi Rifle!

Might want to stand in front of a tree when you fire that the first time. you wouldn't want to fall down!!

there is no way it can be worse than the 375 H&H i used to own was. that mother would lay out most men.

Ha. I beat-cha !

Last Monday I bought a like new H&R Topper Model 158 .30-30 for a C-note. He wanted $110, but the bore and chamber were filthy dirty. Took the chance. I spent fifteen minutes cleaning it out and clearing the bore, monobloc, and reciever with brake cleaner to find the bore appears pristine. A couple quick squirts of CLP in the works and all is good.

Yes, I cleaned all lubricant off the lug and catch. Now I need .30-30 brass so I can load up some rounds and go play.

Can anyone here date it from the serial #? 23XXX It has the snap off foreend.

what are the two prefix letters?

There are no prefix letters. The caliber marking is above the reciever shoulder and is .30 - .30 CAL. WIN.

The serial is below the reciever shoulder and has no prefix letters. Other than that all markings are on the reciever, not the barrel.

if it doesnt have prefix letters its OLD. pre-buyout old. can you list everything on the reciver? that would help.

Can do.

TOPPER MODEL 158
HARRINGTON AND RICHARDSON, INC
AE US PAT. 2876576

The fitting at the rear of the foreend and trigger guard are black shiny plastic. The buttplate is gone, replaced by a Limb-Saver slip-on pad.

The rear sight is a Lyman fold down open in a dovetail, the front is a steel blade dovetailed into a low, plain steel ramp. The only thing resembling a proof mark is a lonely numeral three stamped into the barrel flat immediately forward of the monobloc. There are three unevenly spaced #6-40 scope mount holes over the chamber with blank filler screws in 'em.

The finish is at least 95% with very little wear on the blue, the barrel finish is slightly worn and had a few very slight spots of thin rust that disappeared with a light rub with 4x steel wool lubed with turpentine showing no damage to the blue.

All in all a pretty good way to spend a hundred bucks.

topper was a pre 2000 buyout moniker. the topper name now belongs to a shotgun line. good buy for a c note.

I've fired an older H&R 10 ga turkey gun. I shoot a Rem 700 Mtn Rifle in .338 Win Mag, and heavy loads in a 45-70 lever gun. That 10 ga H&R beat them hands down for the nastiest recoil.

We wound up carving a groove in the inside of the forum and filling it with lead, glued in with hot glue. Then we drilled some holes under the buttplate and filled them with lead and sealed the same way. We added somewhere around 3 pounds to that gun, and it was STILL a nasty little bugger.
