Hey everyone. I'm looking for a little help. I just acquired some 195 gr. plain base boolits for the 33 wcf (Lyman mould 338237). I looked in an old Ideal Handbook and saw a plinking load published for this boolit at 5 grns. of Unique for an estimated velocity of 1100 fps. Wow, this sounds pretty mild.....if not too low for safety. Does anyone have experience with this load? Or can someone out there with quickload run this and give me an opinion. What's messing me up is that the same loading manual states 14 grains of Unique is a starting load for the lead gas check version of the 33 cast boolit (Lyman 338320). Thats a big difference!

Alternatively, if someone can recommend another powder and load for the 338237, Id appreciate it.

Thanks, but those loads are primarily for jacketed boolits. Even the most reduced load listed on Chuck Hawks is too hot for a non-gas checked cast.

Whith zero sarcasm I suggest that you read this Sticky. When you are done you will have a greater appreciation for the use of unique in cast rifle loads.

Personally I think that you are better off using Bullseye for the plinker load, and 2400 for the higher velocity load. The Unique really finds it’s stride with the mid range loads.

I cannot vouch for the safety of the loads below, they are posted for reference only. My .33 WCF is long gone, and I never tried Unique in it - although I do use it in my .45-70 RB where 12.0 grains under a 425-grain cast bullet has a measured loading density of 43%.

In his treatise Complete Guide to Handloading Phil Sharpe lists 11 grains of Unique for the 195 gr. gc boolit gives 1440 fps @ 16,800 pressure. Around there should give you a place to start. Regards, Woody
