Have a top eject NRA .30-30 Musket that I would like to have the barrel replaced with a 28" round barrel in .38-55. I do not want the barrel rebored! Would like some contact information on gunsmiths that could do this. I need a good lever action gunsmith, I don't want the outward look to change other than the barrel being longer than stock.

Numrich may or may not have a takeoff Winchester 94 Crazy Horse or similar 38-55 barrel- I'd start there.

I plan on using a Douglas Barrel Air Gaged as I want the best barrel I can get.

I see. There are lots of referrals for John Taylor on this site for this kind of work.

As I remember things from back in the 90s, Douglas only offers their air aged barrels in 30 caliber or smaller. Thats not to say things haven't changed since I closed up my shop in 2001.
A properly fitted Douglas premium grade wood shoot with anything else until it was going on a full blown bench gun. & sorry to say, but a Winchester 94 doesn't make a very competitive bench gun.

douglas makes a very good barrel: but far from the very best

+1

It won't shoot any better with a premium barrel than it would with the issue barrel.

I am a little curious, though - why are you so adamant about not using the EASY button option (re-boring) ?

Have you looked at Green Mountain Barrels? They make a lot of barrels for the medium to large calibers from the Black Powder era. I am pleased with my 32-40 and 45-70 Green Mtn barrels on original high walls. 8-)

Lots of money for a 2" longer barrel to be custom made-versus a JES rebore that changes the outward appearance only at the caliber stamp. You will only have a 26" barrel, but JES will charge you $250- and your new 38-55 might out shoot the original. Mine did.
Now that I've vented my opinion, add McGowan barrels to your list. They custom barreled Layne Simpson's Marlin 336 7mm Shooting Times Easterner. They might can help you.

I have been using Douglas barrels for most of my builds for a while now. I'm a dealer for Green Mountain but they have not had many barrels in stock for a while. McGowen burned me on a couple barrels several years ago so I don't use them any more. Shilen barrels are another good brand. Most barrel companies make good barrels, if they don't they are short lived.
