Soooo, been off on a new tangent lately — single shot Sharps and recently looking for a rolling block to turn into a 38-55 for my wife. The prices on them blow my mind though, what would have been a $100 or less ( much les..) in the 70’ & 80’s are now….more….a LOT more.

In perusing Gunbroker I’ve made dozens of lowball bids and never won an auction…..however, upon waking this morning I won a really nice Pedersoli 45-70 which is ok as I can load them with cast down to lower velocities to make it comfortable for her to shoot. It’s almost one of those “if it’s too good to be true” things but I think I made out ok — what do you guys think?

I think you did very good. That is a good looking rifle. Make up some loads with unique or blue dot and she will have a great time. A pad on the butt stock or a strap on shooting pad will go a long way with that gun also.

I think you did OK in today's market. Year ago that would have been way overpriced. I had that one on my watch list but as I already have the Pedersoli made Navy Arms version of that rifle I just watched and didn't bid. I hope the wife works out a lot because those are heavy suckers. Been thinking about having the front end of my barrel turned down to save a little weight. Maybe one day I'll get around to it. I had one of those Navies and it was a great shooter. Really liked oversized bullet, like 460 462. I let the gun go for a two cylinder diesel genny with 3 hours on it. I had to take a bit off the hammer face to allow for bullet to contact rifling on loading..it was a very good shooter. I used Unique and 4759 or black or duplex. Price you paid is OK. You can't sit on the sidelines of life waiting for the deal of a lifetime. You can load the 45 down to "girl" levels and still have fun. have fun be safe

I'd say you done pretty good. I've been shooting one of those Navy Arms Pedersoli RBs with a 30" half-round barrel for several years and have never...not once...felt any regret for the purchase. Since then, I've acquired a couple more 45-70s but I still enjoy shooting that old RB just as much as I do the falling blocks.

You did fine for today prices, nice roller.
For my wife, I would make that her gun, as I did her 391 12ga and her M-96 Swede. A shortened stock, a flat grindable 1” recoil pad, lighten the barrel by making it a 1/2 round tapered barrel, right at the end of the shortened forearm, reinstall the front sight on a new dovetail blank. Might consider an adjustable tang rear sight.

I don't know what it is but I never liked the feel of the Navy Arms roller, it's just not a Remington. Tippmann started making rolling blocks and boy are they different, all coil spring action. A little lower price for a new one.https://tippmannarmory.com/rolling-block-357-magnum/ . I ended up with two of their actions and I don't think much of them. The hammer is not even close to a Remington, could have about 1/2" cut off. The barrel is shouldered on the inside instead of the face of the action and the breach block is made of two pieces. The hammer spring is a coil with a transfer bar for the hammer. Also they left out one important part, there is not trigger block to keep the trigger locked in place when the breach is open. If you pull the trigger the hammer is stopped by the breach but when you close the breach the hammer drops. A few times of doing this and the trigger could be broken by the safety notch which would allow the gun to go off.

I’ve owned a good number of Pedersoli made 45-70 rifles in Sharps, High Walls, and Lever guns. All of them had the same barrel as slugged……. .4575”. All of them were very accurate. I’m sure the gun will shoot fine. For a pleasant, yet deadly load, try Unique powder or 2400. I’ve found 2400 to be one of my most accurate loads and I’ve shot several deer with that load. Nice gun!

That’s awesome, all of my 45-70 dies throw at about .462 and I’ve got a few sizers for different barrels. I’ve seen a lot of suggestions about Unique and 2400 and I am going to shoot black, but my previous loads have mostly been 4198 and have been extremely accurate in my Marlins. Thanks for the compliment!

If it's like mine was, you won't have to load it sown much, the weight of the barrel will cure a lot of recoil.
