I don't have a chronograph, but was wondering about using "The Load" with the 358 Winchester. I have quite a bit of Reddot and a decent amount of 2400. I was wondering about the approximate velocity, as I have some 158 grain Hornady XTP-HPs which expansion range is 700-1400 FPS, I don't want it much north of 1400 out of the 22" barrel. Basically, looking for a 357 mag pistol load out of the 358 win rifle.

According to the Lyman cast bullet handbook#3, the starting load for the .358 is 9.5 grains of Red Dot with a 150 (358430) grain round nosed cast bullet. This gives a velocity of 1425fps. 13.5 grains of Red dot withe the same bullet gives 1745fps.

I was thinking around 10 grains or so of reddot would be a good number. Thanks!

8.5 gr of Red Dot under the LEE 158 FN bevel base gives me 1,300 ish in my 350 Rem Mags. (20" & 22" bbl's) Great load sounds like clapping your hands. I have been loading up the same 50 cases and walk around and plink at gongs and lolie pops on the the weekend. Your cases should last nearly forever just neck anneal every so often. Out of the original 50 I have only lost about 5 or 6 to split necks. At least 25 reloads.

Very cool. All my brass is reformed 308 and 243 brass. Didn't split any necks during forming, and I have annealed them afterwards. I have some 180 grain XTPs as well, but i thought a 357 mag level round might be a good start for my daughter to use, if she wants to hunt with me.

I’ve only tried with the Lee 200gr, but my Red Dot and 2400 loads have been in the 2-3” range vs 1.5” for a couple of slower powders (1/12”). 30-06 and 308 have done very well the faster powders. I’m curious if the lighter boolit does better with the faster powders. Let us know how they shoot!

11.5 gn 2400 will be about 1350 fps .

Just opened up a spreadsheet with my 350 Rem Mag Loads:

I did these for my daughter when she was younger for practice loads using Iron sights for Black Powder Deer hunting. At that time she was used to her scoped 243 which I also downloaded for practice. I was able to get a downloaded 58 gr V-max to shoot similar (with no scope adjustments) to the Hornady 100 SP out to 200 yds

13.0 gr SR7625 NOE 180 WFN 1,400 fps

3.0 gr Red Dot Lyman 0.360 Round ball tumbled in Lars Xlox mix and thumb pressed in case sprue up. Surprisingly accurate at 65 yds ave 825 fps. I loaded these into unisized cases fired from the rifle I planned to shoot them out of.

Below are chrono graphed velocities of 8.5 gr Red Dot and the LEE 158 FN

Out of 8-9 grains Reddot or 11-12 grains 2400, which do you all think would be more position insensitive?

11-12 grns * 0.0742 = 0.82 - 0.89 CCs of 2400 and
8-9 grns * 0.1413= 1.13 - 1.27 CCs of Reddot

Reddot would definitely fill the cartridge more.
