I have a S&W Model 67-5 Combat Masterpiece 4-1/2" that shoots basketball size groups at 25 yards. My wife's S&W Model 60 snubby shoots 2" groups at the same distance.

I think that I've figured out why. Having picked up a wonder nine, for grins and giggles: I dropped a plated lead bullet for the 9mm sized and mic'ed at +.356 " into the cylinder throats. It would not drop through any of the throats on the Combat Masterpiece. Fell right through the throats on the snubby.

Since it's been more than a year, it's out of warranty. Sounds like it's time for it to make a trip to see DougGuy, given the wife's approval (she likes to hold it over me that she (her gun) shoots better than me (my gun)

You have found the answer. Doug Guy can fix it.

Yeah Doug is very fast and great work, took 2-3 days to send to him and he send back cylinder a day after he got it, thanks Doug

Agree, Doug is the answer. The S&W throats should be .357 - .358.

If it were me I would slug your barrel and send the slug with the cylinder. You want the cylinder throats the same size or 0.0005" larger.

Can't wait for an after report.

I'm not a gunsmith :) How to remove the cylinder from the yoke on the S&W Model 67? Or, do I send the revolver to Doug and let him do his thing?

You take out the screw on the front of the side plate and the crane will come out with the cylinder. Maybe watch it on YouTube video if you're still unsure.

I watched the You Tube video: Looks simple enough. But: I'm not sure what S&W torques that screw to! I'm a mechanic and I couldn't break that screw loose!

Tomorrow or sometime later I'll somehow fasten the frame to the bench and try to loosen that screw. I have a nice gouge from my technician's screwdriver on my nice stainless frame from my slippage :)

Looks simple enough, but...

I don't know what a "technician's screwdriver" is but you need a set of hollow ground drivers in many bit widths and thicknesses. They are worth the money and save a lot of messed up screw heads.

It may be loctited if it's that tight. Don't keep fighting it or you will likely just damage the screw or booger your gun. Heat will break thread locker loose. Then, use a manual impact driver (NOT an impact wrench) to loosen the screw.

If you start feeling uncomfortable - STOP. This sort of thing is cheap bread and butter work for a gunsmith. Pay a little, save the damage.

I had just the opposite problem with a .45colt Anaconda. It would pattern instead of group no matter what I did while my 625 Smith was deadly accurate. One day I got out the calipers and started measuring and comparing. The cylinder throats on the Colt were bigger than the Smith. I started loading .454 bullets in the Colt and lo and behold it was grouping. I used it and the Smith to kill bowling pins when that was a gun game. Would take 292 gr .458 bullets that I cast and swage them to .454. Those pins didn’t have a chance.

Be sure to put at least 3 or 4 empty cases in the cylinder before turning the cylinder off the crane. Otherwise, you can break the pin very easily. james
