Using BR-5 powder bought in January of this year. loading .38 spec w/WSP and 4.5 grns of BR-5 with 147grn pill on top. Problem is ignition , Unburned powder in cylinder and on shooting table bullet stuck in barrel. Out of five test fires, 3 in barrel , one fell out of barrel onto ground and one shoot but very weakly.. OPTIONS ??? Primers seem good ( work in other Unique loads) . Powder BAD??? ( hope not just bought 7 lbs) Solutions are what I'm seeking. Any thoughts???

Greetings,

Who makes BR-5 powder? I have not heard of it.

BR 5 is not similar to Unique. Jeff advertises it as such but is appreciably slower for those who are looking for Unique but can’t find data for BR 5. Burning rate is very close to VV 3N38. He does supply data for the 38 SPC and lists a minimum of 5 grains with a 158 grain bullet. Your 4.5 grain load is a bit light. I did some testing of Unique and BR 5 with 45 Colt cartridges. As a comparison, I used my Black Hawk with 7.5” barrel. With 7.9 grains of Unique, velocity was an average of 887 f/s with a Lee, 255 RNFP. When I loaded 7.9 grains of BR 5, velocity dropped to 674 f/s. Bump it up and I bet your problem will disappear
