View Full Version : ID this SW 38sp
Looking at a SW 38sp. Short heavy barrel maybe 4in, no rear sight and front ramp. Exposed ejector rod that rests against a pinned lugg. 6 shot and looks like a trigger shoe has been put over a standard trigger. Std walnut grips
Thing that has me stumped is that there is no model number on the yoke just the 5 digit SN and "G9" with some type of figure i cant make out. Shaped sort of like a 3 leaf clover
Anyone?

I'm with Shawlerbrook on this one. Tempting to say it's a Pre Model 10, but without photos there is no way of knowing.
On another note. The serial number on a S&W revolver is stamped into the bottom of the grip frame. Numbers stamped into the yoke that swings in and out of the revolver, are assembly numbers.
Yep, a photo is going to be needed for this one.

What im most interested in is the G9 in place of a model number.
I feel pretty sure its a heavy barrel 10

+1 The G9 may be the model designation for a foreign contract. I believe there were some surplussed out imported back into US a few years back.

I'm with the group leaning towards a clone or foreign contract model... definitely need a pix for the visual

Without a photo , no way to tell .
G9 in a three leaf clover ...doesn't sound like a S&W , probably a copy ...don't pay S&W money for a copy ...the copies range from "not too bad" ...to "Oh My God this is a Nightmare" .

On my S&Ws the Mod # is stamped on the frame under the crane right next to the hinge "MOD686" "MOD63" for the two revolvers I own.

WellI “think” the Model 10-6 was the first heavy barrel one. It’s got a pinned in barrel so it’s got to be early80’s or older. You can check the serial number on the bottom of the grip frame and get the answer pretty quickly.

If you're looking at it, get your wallet out and buy it. That's a nice looking m10.

I agree with Larry. When I was at Ruger in the 1980s the company produced a run of 9mm Service Six revolvers which were marked G for Gendarmarie and a French fleur proof mark. Some SP101s were also done after I left the company.

I'm going to go look at it but nickel has never been a thing for me, I've always liked the blued. The price would have to be killer for me to jump on it and then it would probably just be a resale for me in a year or two after shooting it some.

That sounds right. I'll look into foreign proof marks. I know some place a premium on different things like that such as police stamped firearms but I'm not one of them, I wouldn't pay extra for it.

Just shooting from the hip, but Garda is the name of the police in the Republic of Ireland, and that looks like a shamrock - so might be Ireland Police issue?
