Hi, I'm out of alliant red dot powder. I use "the load" in my milsurps with great success.
I could have IMR red. It seems very close in burnig rate. A bit slower. Someone have tried to substitute?
Thanks
Mat

I would think that it should, it's very similar to several other shotgun powders.
It was discontinued a while ago I think.

As far as I know it should be OK. To be sure ask Outpost here on the forum, he should probably know.

Never used IMR Red or Promo either. I would reduce charge 15 percent and work back up to velocity over chronograph to be on the safe side.

I have only used it in 38 special. A tenth either way to known Red dot loads. I have never used it in "The Load".

I have promo and imr red. Shooting imr red and alliant red dot has proven to show that the alliant powder more accurate in my rifles.
I also believe that the imr series (red, green, blue ect) have been discontinued.

Egad, just when I thought I might try one of them and they're discontinued already. :)

The IMR Red data for shotgun loads is pretty much identical to RD as far as pressure and velocity. I bought 2 kegs of it last year. It bulks the same as RD (same bushing/same weight) and chrono's the same in my 12ga and 3/4oz. 20ga loads. It wouldn't surprise me that Hogdon bought some car loads of RD,GD and BD and repackaged them as IMR RED, Green, and Blue to test the market.

Load for load I get the same results from Promo as I do Red Dot. Promo seems to be Red Dot, without the red dots.

Ok, thanks guys, I'll buy a few pounds as it seems to be more and more difficult to get powder.

Yes, per the Hodgdon website, IMR Red, Blue, Green and Target have been discontinued.

Just for your information.
Just compared a few loads in 30-30 and 8x57 with red dot and IMR red powders over a chronograph.
To get the same velocity as the red dot, I had to add or reduce the IMR powder charge by (-0.5gr in 8x57 and +0.5gr in 30-30)
Shot equally well and equally consistent.
So, all good!

Geez...I just learned of their existence a few months ago. Had they been out long?
