Hi,

I bought a Lyman 454424 and I was wondering if it had Keith’s design?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220302/a81b16a76496ecb27fd8be213694e29b.jpg

Yes and no, Keith's design had a square lube groove which equals more lube ut difficult boolit extraction from mold. The round lube groove slides outta the mold easier as there is no shelf for the boolit to work out of before dropping.

Lyman also reduced diameter of front driving band north of crimp groove to facilitate easy chambering, because mass market users didn't understand need to size bullets to fit cylinder throats. Undersized front band impairs alignment of cartridge in chamber, degrading accuracy if cartridge fit in chambers is sloppy.

You have Lyman's modifications to Elmer Keith's original design .
The first tip off is the Lube Groove , Elmer's was square bottom , Lyman's is round bottom .
Lyman also altered the top driving band . Elmer was upset with that change ( I think Lyman ticked him off)
At the start of this section is a "Sticky" ...it might be the second one Titled "Real" Keith Bullets ...
there are 23 pages and some interesting information on the Real Keith boolits can be learned .
Al "Swede" Nelson of NOE Bullet Moulds weighed in on some of these posts ...if I remember correctly .
Later on down the road I purchased several NOE Elmer Keith Signature Moulds from NOE and I believe Al did his research on them to make sure these moulds were done correctly and as Elmer wanted them . Super nice moulds .

Also while Keith lube groove was flat-bottomed, it was not "square", but had a 60-degree included angle on the sides for free release. Tom at Accurate cuts his Keith styles in that manner.

In a nutshell! LOL

A full diameter front band can be stubborn in a dirty throat. I was shooting this boolit in my SBH yesterday and noticed some resistance to fully chamber. And oddly enough, the front band drops at about .429" though i size to .431". The revolver was not very dirty either.

Seems I have read that Elmer also insisted on a square sided front band even though it was more difficult to drop from the mold.

The wfn style that are rounded usually have a tangent portion ahead of the crimp groove and are not as prone to chambering issues. They seem to shoot well too. I bought the above mold for my Henry ss which has a long throat. Works good in the SBH too though i like my 275 and 250 hp more. ( less recoil )
