I'm wondering if any of you have tried loading slow burners like 4350 or 4831 in .223? I've got a couple of opened jugs that are from back in the 90's and just haven't been loading much of these. After a few decades of prairie dogging I've discovered a bunch of odds and ends and partial dust covered boxes of J-words on the back of my shelf and want to use these up for plinking loads. I've been loading for many years but never tried a combination like this.

These loads would be shot in a Henry single shot or Tikka bolt so function would not be an issue. Again, my purpose would be plinking and ringing a swinger etc. so Hornet level performance would be just fine. Has anyone gone down this road?? Thanks

100% fill will get you around 2200 fps with 4350 and 1975 fps with 4831 with 55 grain bullets -- burning only around 70% of the powder according to Quick Load.

I tried IMR 4350 and it shot well ( 2 inch at a 100 )but heated up the barrel and left a little powder in the barrel , this was with the RCBS mold .
Honestly I haven’t found much I couldn’t load in a bottle neck case with 4350 / 4831

Have not loaded any. IMR data from 1999. Use a drop tube to load the powder, may help the compressed (C) loads.

Thanks for the responses. With pressure being that low it might even work to use up some old CCI 450 for better ignition?

A full case with a mag prime will produce more gas output. The bullet could move sooner, if bullet hold, neck tension is light.
Here, a crimp from a Lee Factory Crimp die may produce better accuracy.
