I have some 30/30 casings that are split on the neck. Are there any cases these can be reformed into? Can't see throwing them in the recycle if they can be used for something.

Proper Annealing will Save your future cases.

As for a case to reform... those that work are more rare then you would likely find.

But 30/30 should be easy to find if ya ask. I have none to spare. But see it offered.

What temperature does one need to anneal at to weld cracks back together?

Back to the question at hand, I know .30 Herrett and .357 Herrett are based on .30-30.

Check out a shell holder chart.

It uses the same shell holder as some other cartridges.
If you can't cut them off below the crack and anneal them- they're goners.

I sorry but once it's cracked it goes for scrap.

anneal to save the good 1s you have
if you have a bunch of loaded1s i would pull them apart and anneal them then reload

As mentioned above, annealing after 3-5 firings will save your cases from cracking. Once the necks crack there's no way to weld them, they're scrap.

Some folks on here make extra length .41 Magnum shotshells using cutoff 30-30 brass. I use both cartridges but I haven't tried that. Yet.

30 Herret and 357 herret are shortened 30-30 cases.

The cases didn't split during firing. I expanded them to move the shoulder forward and split a few. Guess I'll trash them. Thanks for all the replys.

Glad I ran across this thread, was getting some split / cracked necks on 30-30 . I've annealed 7-08 , 7TCU , 223 before in my single shot pistols but for some reason never give it a thought for my levergun . I've annealed what I have cleaned and empty so should be good to go , I saved a few for the Herrett but some cracks were starting into the shoulder and the Herrett couldn't save em . These were out of fired brass before I got them and fired count ? .
Thanks again for bringing up this topic .

Good info. I hadn't thought about using 30-30 for 41 mag shotshells.

I got 500 a few years back that gad been used I think for generating load data. Little circles embossed on the sides. Not worried since I'm not loading them hot.

The 30-30 brass will come apart after 30 to 40 reloading in a perfect chamber, even with annealing and shooting cast with Unique. I have been shooting steel at long distance for 45 years, practice 3-4 times a week, match on the weekends. I wear brass out, no plating, no markings left, etc. I also shoot and then clean all my brass.
I have had some guns that gave me just one shot, with their brass. These go to a new home of the non-reloader.
How many reloads you get is a nebulous figure at best, depending on the loads used, brass used, chamber quality, headspace, etc.

Here is a small test I did, on just one case. Might be of interest to this conversation.

x2 with that.

i never annealed 30-30, but i got a least 20 firings on three different rifles. i have a 7x30 waters(tc contender) but that was the cases fault(had box of 20 7x30 cases, split 17 cases).

i bought 500 starline 30-30 cases for my 35/30-30 and i load up 100 cases with 2400/dacron and a 200gr rcbs fn gc just to see if they spilt. i'm on 11 shots, no anneal and they keep on going!!!!
