Can anybody hazard a guess on why they paint WWs now? Seems like adding an un-needed expense.

It's to keep the electrolitic chemical reaction between dissimilar metals to a minimum. A lot of alloy wheels out there on cars and trucks these days.

I haven't seen much of this on lead WW. I have seen a LOT of it on zinc. I think 737 has nailed the reason.

Exactly, most of the painted ones I found are labled "AL" meaning OK for use on Aluminum wheels with no risk of contamination. Joe

I've been seeing a lot of painted lead weights, not just the zinc.

So if Al means ok for aluminum wheels, what do Aw, P, and Mc mean? Just going from memory (ie: may not have them exactly right) but seems to me there are a lot of different codings in the same place, Al just being one of them.

I figured it was to keep the envioramentalists from howling about lead molecules flying off and getting in the rivers.
