Not exactly sure what I've gotten myself into, but seems to function. Will need a deep cleaning before I would attempt to shoot it.

Thanks, I've gotten a small batch of brass to load, but still looking at bullet / powder options.

The action is very gummy from old oils. This will probably not be a quick get out and shoot rifle for me. I want to get it cleaned up proper first.

I had a Marlin CB 38-55 years ago and stupidly sold it.

I predict you are going to enjoy that 94! The 38-55 is such a classic old round.

Taking a M94 down for cleaning is not as difficult as most believe. Don’t hesitate to do it yourself.

Your rifle looks awesome!!! Do you have any history or where it came from!! I've wanted a lever for many years but never found the right one. Congrats!!!

It was gifted to me recently from my father in law. It was his dad's for as very long as he could remember. It does unfortunately have a (lightly) engraved name and date on it from the 20's I believe. The name is no relation. I haven't looked close enough to see if it could be polished out, but it wasn't done with a pencil engraver. More like a pocket knife. It has not been shot in at least the last 40 years.

I would leave the name alone. It is now part of the rifle’s history.
Wish you were closer. That is one 94 I would love to help clean.

I agree to all of that. My father in law gave it to me with the assumption it would probably just get stuck in a corner or in the safe until I hand it down. I on the other hand want to at least see it punch a few holes in some paper...........possibly more.

I never shot one, but handling one of those long barreled Model 94's makes me wonder just how the carbines became so popular.

You definitely know you got ahold of something when you pick it up!

My father picked up a 93 Marlin when I was a kid and it had three notches in the stock. It had been a 25-36 when it was found in an old miners cabin. The barrel and mag tube were shot so it got sent to marlin in the early 50s to get a carbine barrel in 30-30 installed. When it was handed down to me I put a 38-55 rifle barrel on it. It got handed down to my daughter last year, still has the three notches.

My great uncle had a 38-55 Winchester and it was one of the most accurate iron-sighted rifles I ever shot. He zeroed it at 200 yds but knew where it shot at longer distances. He liked to shoot wild turkeys with it - the solid lead bullet would not damage a lot of meat.

Been looking for one of those in 38 55 for three years and can't find one for under 2K with a good bore.

.

That's a nice Model 1894 Rifle (model, as opposed to the "Carbine" model) in one of the original chamberings - what's not to like ? ?

I want to see your front sight. This one is from 1898 production. Also unit has a two-blade296453296453296454 flip type rear sight. uncle mike

You got yourself into a great old rifle in a great old caliber. Congratulations !!

100% in agreement with the others on the carved name , kinda adds to the cool factor . If you know what area it came from you can very likely find some info on the person that carved their name in it .

I was having the same problem. I did not want to spend that kind of money on a rifle that has a bore that "looks pretty good for it's age" or "minor pitting, should shoot okay". I bought a Uberti 1894 Winchester in 38-55 and could not be happier. After a break in period and very short load development I took it to the 2021 Lever Action Silhouette Nationals. I shot a new personal best. I then won a shoot off for 2nd place in my class. Big grin on this old face that day.

I will get some more photos up this weekend hopefully. I'm pretty sure it has the same front sight as yours, but the rear is a buckhorn / elevator type.
