Looking around for something new the shoot, I've got a Lyman #470216 mold that drops 600 grains.
To make a muzzleloader for this rascal, is there anything available to resleeve or rebarrel without having to change the exterior shape of the breech and barrel?

Is that designed to use in a 470 Capstick or something similar? What is the actual diameter? Very interesting!

Yep, it's a .470 dangerous game rifle type mold, like for a .470NE or Capstick, one of those things.
The test castings came out a little over .470" but I don't remember how much. Was thinking about a .470" bore diameter as there's a .468" sizer in hand. But, I'm not real sure what kind of breech and barrel combo I'd have warm fuzzies with. A TC New Englander has 1 1/16" diameter at the hind end but eh, I just don't know about that.

Looking at it from the aspect of grains per square inch, that boolit would pose a greater obstruction with more inertia, more grains per square inch, than a 530 grain in a Whitworth. That got me to scratching my head.

If you want to have you barrel re lined , call Bob Hoyt.
He will tell you your options , based on what you want.
The Relining won't change the exterior looks.

if you get that thing motoring properly out of anything under a 12 pound gun you are gonna wonder why you came up with this crazy idea. 1 1/8 across the flats and 34 inches long proly still gonna leave you light on it. :awesome: sounds like fun though.

Heh, it would have to be a target rifle for sure.
I specified a 24" twist in my .458" bore New Englander due to practical boolit weights for a hunting rifle, no need for a Whitworth slug to push all the way through deer.

I'd considered having the tops of the 470216 blocks ground down to make a lighter version of the boolit but this could be the only one on planet Earth. It would feel like I was trimming the sides of the Mona Lisa.

Is that a nose pour? The various weights listed remind me of some molds that had inserts for different weights, or adjustable base pin.

That big version would need a really fast twist.

A good excuse to rebore one of those slow twist Ped. Gibbs 40 cal rifles if you could find one at a good price.

It's a base pour.

At least as far back as the 1980's, those bullets were suggested for the .577/.450 Martini Henry, by Jim Jukes, writing in HANDLOADER magazine. The as-cast diameter will load in MkIV rifles.

Now there's a tidbit of knowledge to file away. Thanks fgd135.

Well, 2022 is almost gone and the mold is still sitting. :(
Think I'll find a dangerous game website and put it up for sale.
