This spring I plan to explore BLC2 and my Powder coating my Lyman 311644 to see what I can see.

Last week I dusted off a plastic jar full of Lyman 311644 boolits I had cast a few years ago to Test powder coated Lyman 311644 in 308 Winchester. After powder coating using Eastwood Blue PC; and cooking, the boolits were Water Quenched immediately after removing from the oven. Boolit was sized to .309 a week later, gas check seated in this step. The .308 Win cases were full length sized, neck tension was established with the factory expander in the sizing die.

Temp: 40 degrees F.

Ballistic Coefficient: 0.272
Brinnel Hardness: 20
Bullet sized: .309
Alloy: 96% Lead, 3% Antimony, 1% Tin
Bullet Powder Coated: Eastwood
Gas Check: Ameri-max Aluminum 0.14”
Powder: BLC2 33 Grains
Primer: CCI-34
Case: Mixed military and commercial Brass
OAL: 2.675 inches
Distance: 100 Yards.
10 Shot Group Size: 3.193 MOA

Since the Lyman 311644 has so many "Odd" and tapering dimensions (Below is a pic from Art & Science of Bullet Casting. Not my boolits, not my measurements, not my pic):

thought I might publish the dimensions from my as cast boolits, as Powder Coated, and as measured after sizing in the Lee .301 sizer.

I believe the Powder Coat paint is giving some level of "Spring Back"; but these are the measurement I was getting at each stage of Boolit Production.

Went to the range this morning to do some more testing. Looks like an improvement from the group in post #1 of this thread with a 2.295 MOA group for 10 rounds. This test increased the Powder charge up to 35 Grains of BLC2.

Rifle: Remington 700 ADL Varmint .308
Barrel Twist: 1 in 12
Wind: 5 Mph left to right.
Temp: 26 degrees F.
Boolit: Lyman 311644
Ballistic Coefficient: 0.272
Brinnel Hardness: 20
Bullet sized: .309
Alloy: 96% Lead, 3% Antimony, 1% Tin
Bullet Powder Coated: Eastwood
Gas Check: Ameri-max Aluminum 0.14”
Powder: BLC2 35 Grains
Primer: CCI-34
Case: Mixed military and commercial Brass
OAL: 2.675 inches
Distance: 100 Yards.
10 Shot Group Size: 2.295 MOA

Will look at increasing BLC2 Powder charge in the future. Stress it till it breaks concept as we increase pressures and velocities. Still 6 to 8 weeks before I will be able to use the Chrony given snow obstacles at the range.

Mustang, I used to own that mould, but it cast @ .3095" at its largest dimension. In spite of that, it was quite accurate in my Win. Mod. 70 .30-06 using no more than 24gr. IMR 4198. I have three suggestions for you: First, size that CB to .311", possibly .310" regardless of whether you shoot it with traditional lube or powder coat it. Second, drop your powder charge (or change your powder) so that you're around 1,750fps. Third, you may get better results with 20 - 22gr. IMR 4198 or 11 - 13gr. Unique. Hope this is helpful to you.

I'd still recommend you stop mixing commercial and military brass. Try a series with one headstamp and see what happens. I also like to drill out the flash holes for cast loads.

Reshot the #3 post group using 35.5 Grains of BLC2 powder, I also used a Dacron Filler. Diameter was increased from .309 to .310 inches. Group was almost double that of post #3.
