I have and H&R Officer's model 45-70. A while back, the action began opening upon firing and ejecting the case. BP, smokeless, it doesn't matter. I need to get it fixed. I doubt I can even sell it with this flaw. So, I need to find a smith who knows TDs and could fix the problem, be it fitting an original breech door to it or???? Do any of you know someone you would recommend?

Give Lee Shaver a call it sounds like you need to have the latch assembly fixed.

John King is not John Taylor. And neither are retired that I know of.

The latch on a trapdoor is pretty simple.
The hammer actually locks it closed.
I found enough parts on Ebay to build a complete rifle.
