I'm shopping this morning.
Trying to get everything I need for my new Ruger Bisley in 45 Colt.

I'm looking at moulds and was wondering what you folks thought of this:
I'm going to order a Lyman 454190 from MidSouth.
Looking at the RCBS moulds, it looks to me like the 45-255-SWC is pretty much the same design.
Go with the RCBS or the Lyman?

I was also thinking of ordering the RCBS 45-250-FN.
I know the weight is redundant, but that much rounder nose has me intrigued.
Any thoughts on that design?

Any other moulds you guys think I should look at.
FYI, I am not a fan of Lee moulds.

EDIT:
RCBS and Lyman use the same numbers for their top punches, right?
In other words, a RCBS #190 is the same as a Lyman #190.
Is that correct?

Both the 454190 and RCBS 45-250-FN use that top punch #, which makes me wonder if there is really as much difference between the two as the pics in the catalogs shows...

Ok, I had forgotten about this thread.

In looking that one over, it appears that the 454190 is more like that RCBS 45-250-FN than the pic in the Lyman catalog indicates. The pic in the catalog shows a wider meplate than it really has.

So now I'm thinking I should get the 454190 and the RCBS 45-255-SWC.

I am new to the 45 Colt cartridge and I had the same questions, which boolit. I noticed that many here liked the 454190 and it looks like a fine boolit. I chose the 452664 because it has a single lube groove and a crimp groove which I like because I don't like crimping into the lead. I also wanted to not have to re-adjust my Star lubersizer for two grease grooves as the 45 acp boolits that I cast also uses a single lube groove. The 452664 also has a large meplat that should make it hit the target hard. The only negative with the 452664 is that it has a small bevel base which could cause problems in a non-Star sizer as it can pick up lube that should be cleaned off before loading. However Buckshot can remove the bevel base feature from your mould if it bothers you. The RCBS design looks good too, but is only available in two cavity design, I have been buying only 4 cavity moulds for my pistol/revolver boolits so I have few RCBS moulds, but those that I have are good quality and cast well. If you have not ordered yourself some Bullplate mould lube from Bullshop, make sure you do, most here that have used it won't cast with out it. You cannot go wrong with those designs you are considering, they should serve you well.

Thanks mtgrs737.

You got me looking at that 452664. I do like the crimp groove. So much so I ordered a 4-cav.
MidSouth has it back ordered but they are supposed to be in this Thursday.

Since I ordered that one, I dropped the RCBS 45-255-SWC and ordered the RCBS 45-250-FN. Looks almost like the 454190, but it has a crimp groove.
Sure wish RCBS would make 4 cavity moulds...

Thanks again for your help. :drinks:

Yep!
That's the picture I saw in that other thread. The pic in the catalog isn't worth two dead flies!!

Yeah baby! Now that's a boolit, sounds like you all ready picked, but my vote goes for the 454190 and the RCBS270SAA, if I can only have two, I know you say you don't like Lee moulds (I don't either, or at least didn't) but that pesky 255 grain flat point in the 6 banger puts out some real nice .455 diameter boolits that weigh in at 260 for me lubed with BAC and pushed with Unique are very accurate. Aside from that all the stuff that has been mentioned either I have used or should work well. Always wanted to try that RCBS 230 grain flatpoint, but haven't bought one yet. Only thing I would warn you about is the Lyman 452424, all three I have bought in the last year have been just good fishing sinkers and nothing short of undersized, misaligned, china could make better drunk, junk.
Good Luck, isn't this fun.:coffee:

The RCBS 270-SAA Keith style is a great design if you are after a bit heavier of a bullet. The melplat is at about 80% and from my guns runs true to aim. It has square lube groove and also has a nice deep crimp groove. It does cast out heavier than 270 with wheel weights (275 grains or so). I prefer this over the lighter 250/255 grainers as I do not see much velocity difference, but do see a difference with the weight as it hits. A very accurate and well designed bullet for hunting or punching paper. Here is an article over the bullet:

OK, so you said you're not a fan of Lee molds, but you really should consider the Lee C452-300-RF. This is a great boolit in the Ruger. The Lee 452-255-RF is also great, as stated above, and is the most accurate boolit for my Bisley.

Also, you don't need boolits much larger than .452 or .453 in that Ruger; the throats are usually undersized and should be opened up to .4525" or .453". No need for a boolit larger than the throats.
