Have a Winchester Miroku highwall 38-55 on it's way. I never reloaded for this cartridge. I have a good amount of Re15 on hand and would like to know if it can be used in this rifle with cast bullets. How about IMR 4320?

My favorite load with cast for my old Marlin 1893 is 9-10 grs. of Unique .

R 15 is a bit slow for the 38-55 but can be used. I don’t think you can hurt yourself with that powder using up to a full case full. I 4320 is the same. Since you have it , try it !

I agree that there are better powders, but I am also one who tries to use what I have on hand. It's worth a try, but go carefully.
A much better choice is Reloder 7, which is about perfect for all the old 19th century rimmed rounds. It's amazingly versatile and I use it in ALL my centerfire cartridges and I load for a lot of different ones!

IMR 3031 is my go to for any of the 38-55/30-30/.32 Winchester special loads , lead or jacketed . Unique, 2400, Red Dot all work well with cast . I have RL 15 but have never tried it for what you are asking about . I use a lot of IMR 4320 but my use is with jacketed bullets in .243 and .32 Remington , 34.5 grains in either one with a 100g bullet in the .243 and a 170 in the .32 Remington. 4320 is discontinued now so I would save it for use in applications where it really shines or trade it for something that would work better in your 38-55 .

My dad shot the Lyman 275248 bullet with H4198 in his Miroku/Winchester 38-55 .

H4198 is your friend in any 38-55...levergun or Highwall.

The burn rate of R15 is very close to IMR3031, I would try a few and see how it does.
