Hello all, I recently aquired a new to me 40 cal. CZ40B This is actually my first venture into casting boolits for a pistol and dont really know how hard of alloy I need to use I just want a low to med. vel load for killing paper targets. Will pipe lead with some tin added (would WQ help any)be good enough for plinking vel. loads. Also has anyone had success with the Lee 145 looks kinda short ?

Thanks,Tim

Pipe lead with 5% tin dropped in a bucket of water will be more than sufficient for target work. I'd go with a heavier bullet, tho, like 175 grs. The heavier bullet will have more bearing surface and be more accurate for you.

Use 50-50 WW/Pb if you want to WQ. Tin-lead does not heat treat without
antimony.

Greetings
I have a Glock and a P9 (Springfield) In 40. I have used straight WW (Water Dropped) on the hard side down to Remelted range scrap and it all works at low pressure.
I have used ACC#5 for just about all my 40 loads. I have not tried a 145 grain boolit. I got a 180 Lee mold (2 cavity) and it worked so well I got another to fast cast. I started with the minimum load and found what would cycle both pistols and shoot a bunch every time I am up there. I like the P9 over the Glock ... but the silly Block outshoots the P9.
FINE Caliber for little handed fellers like me. But I still will keep my Remington Rand.
God Bless you !

dont know about czs but for semi auto handguns i like hard lead. Its not that leading will occur if i go with softer but accuracy allways seems to get better with harder alloys.

This is true-- forgot all about that.

Thanks all,Looks like I'll mix in some WW alloy to harden up some.

One other NICE thing about the CZ-75B in 40 S&W........rifling twist rate is 1-16", MUCH lead-friendlier than the usual 1-10" or 4 turns/meter pitch given to the 40 S&W.

The Lee 175 TC design shoots VERY well in my CZ-75B, 750-950 FPS.

I have fired and examined pure lead bullets fired in 45 acp, the rifling marks from the lands were 25% wider than with a bullet cast from lino, if pure lead is too soft for 45 acp with 4.0 of bullseye it will surely be too soft for 40 short-weak. Group size was 2x larger with pure lead, the bullets did not lead the barrel.
