I posted this on a dedicated Muzzleloading Hunting sight, but it is a lead ball and you gents enjoy a story. Thought I would share:

The four day Ohio Muzzleloader Sesson is here and almost gone. The older Lyman GPR I purchased this past Fall from a gentleman at the Ohio Gun Collector's Association show has given me many hours of tinkering with smoothing the bore and learning what it will shoot adequately. I've settled on 80 grains of FFFg for the time being and a box of Hornaday Swaged .530 balls that I got in a swap 25 years ago. This is the first 54 caliber MZ I've owned, though a passel of 50's in the last 35 years. I've sighted it in at 80 yards, and it shows low about 3" at 100. That could be me more than the rifle, as I am not ecstatic with the Lyman replacement sights that came with it. That will be dwelt with another time. For now I needed it to make meat and this afternoon was the day.

I was granted permission to hunt this farm about 5 years ago. How pleasing it is to be able to walk the long dirt lane back to the far reaches of the property in the cold wind and sunshine a little after 3 pm, especially since missing all of last season with a busted foot. But I've been determined to hunt this year, and hunt I have been doing. The 45/70 toppled over the young buck opening morning of firearms season, and I've not filled a doe tag since. Not for lack of trying.

Saturday evening I gambled and sat on the other end of the back 40 instead of my normal area. Sure enough, the 4 does would have been in my lap had I done so. As it was they were too far away with no good way to sneak closer. This afternoon, with the wind direction I did want to be closer to where I've seen them come out of the woods this season but had to take in consideration where my scent would blow to. I took another gamble, and parked my butt at the base of a small Black Walnut tree near the woods but skirting the field edge. The tree trunk and brush were behind to break up my outline, but I was pretty exposed.

On the good chance the ladies arrive near the same time and place as two evenings prior my chances were good.

At approximately 4:40 pm the parade began out of the woods along the far fence line where I normally sit, but the prevailing wind wouldn't permit it this time. They were just too far for a shot with the PRB and a new gun that I am not sure of the trajectory at over 150 yards. They appeared to be heading to the neighboring field on a mission. Didn't think I had a chance at one of them this outing, when the skippies out front veered to my left. That was interesting, as it changed the direction of the other two larger deer bringing up the rear. Still too far. Watch, sit tight, see what happens. Then, all at once, as if something to their off side spooked them, they flushed my direction. Yes, they were going to come back to the area they normally converge upon, only this time I was there. It wasn't the best of situations, because if they rushed in too fast and close I may not get lined up before being spotted, and one of the youngsters was making a beeline right at me. When Momma checked up broadside a good piece out I already had a steady rest on the cross sticks, sighted high up on her shoulder and gently touched off. The impact was nearly as loud as the report, and down she instantly went. Pandamonium broke out and deer were scattering in all directions, except the larger doe I just shot. I suspected a spine hit prompting a fast reload. It was obvious she wasn't getting up and I walked out to give her a finishing shot lower into the chest cavity.

This old, new Lyman GPR was christened rather well. 96 long strides from the sitting tree to her final resting place was paced off, twice. Skinning her out this evening round ball that broke the spine was against the offside hide. It held up impressively for what it plowed through.

Weighs in at 203.1 grains.

I'll be in the market for a round ball mold eventually, but am pleased I've keep those Hornaday Swaged balls around all this time. Sure is good to layer up and make another hunting memory, as well as some more meat.

Great story and the best kind of end to a hunt…

My 54 always shot best with 90 gr FFg Goex and patched ball. It was one of those deals where the groups were so-so until I hit 90 then they suddenly shrank to an inch at 50 yds. I think the ball wasn’t expanding with the smaller charges.

For a deer the load with a 54 I have always used 100 grains fff. Burns cleaner and is more accurate than ff in every ml I have shot. To hunt rabbit or squirrel I load 50 grains fff. Shoots to sights at 25 and 50 yards. For patch materials I use pillow ticking. Patch lube is 1/2water and 1/2 Dawn dish soap. This cleans barrel everytime you load a ball. Enjoy your rifle. They are well made.

Good morning and Congratulations
This is a fine tale and good photos ! Your persistence and load in that rifle got the job done nicely !!
Accuracy always surplants power. If using Goex we also use 3F far more than 2F.
Blesses my heart to read this. Thank you !

Well done sir!! I believe you will come to love the 54. I fell in love with it...oh goodness, probably 35 years ago? I haven't owned a 50 since. Mine like 90-100 grs. and I've never recovered a ball but, I don't believe I ever shot a deer with a ML beyond about 60 yards.

Congratulations! Some good eating right there. I killed a nice 8 point at 44 feet with my .54 Lyman pistol a few years back. PRB over 50 grs of FFFG set him down- literally. I'd love a lightweight .54 rifle but they aren't exactly common.....

Good story and good deer to boot. I had a pal who said any deer with a bow was a good deer and I think it goes the same for a PRB also . I have been using 100 gr of 2f but find a lot of fouling as it must be over kill and not all burning so I am going to dial it back to maybe 90 and see how it shoots. I took a little meat buck with my Hawken and the the bullet looked almost identical to yours. Started out a 535 ball at 234.0 grains and ended up a pancake at 227.3 grains. Hit it behind left shoulder ,hit a rib, took a right turn ,cut the top of the heart and liver ending up under the hide ahead of the right rear quarter, missing the paunch and ran maybe 20 yds. Making your own bullets will add another smile but either way it's all good. Congratulations again.

Sure enjoyed your story. I, too, like the .54 RB. So far, none have ever gotten away.

I've never hunted with round balls. My rifle is a custom Hawken/Plains Rifle I built many moons ago. A .58 cal that I load with my homemade 2F and a 560 grain conical out of a mould I bought from Dixie. 560 grain beast. Last I checked, they don't offer it any longer. Sad

Travisbishop,
Out of curiosity, what is the rate of twist on your custom Hawkins/Plains Rifle? Can you post pictures? (I can't figure it out). So far, my hunting has mostly been with .54 patched round ball like the OP. Have others, but really like the patched .54.

TravisB, I hunted for decades with conical slugs with the 50 caliber rifles. It has been in the last 7 or 8 years I switched to the PRB for whitetail. They work dandy. A front leg bone at 100 yards made for a difficult tracking job once. This 54 caliber has more thump. That 58 would be a freight train.

I second the .58 :happy dance:
So far my favourite for sure. She’s a slow 1:70 twist and liking 110grs Goex 2F, cast rb and precut pillow ticking patch. She rests in a TC .54 Hawken stock and gentle on the shoulder. :)

My muzzleloading rack of around 20 ranges from a .25 caliber rifle to a 12 gauge fowler and are primarily flintlocks. Regardless of the caliber, most of my rifles increased their accuracy when I put a lightly lubed wool/felt wad between the powder and the patched round ball. My experience with a round ball is that a blood trail is often lacking and it's necessary to search for the downed deer in the direction of its travel, often not that far away.

We shot a pile of east ILL-nois corn crunchers with .570 RB cast of 40-1 and always had exit holes and plenty of red trail. Larger calibers made larger exits cast of 40-1. We hunt river bottoms so 33 yards was our longest shot.

ChristopherO what county were you hunting in. I grew in Scioto and brother lives in Clark.
