My plan is to build another cartridge rifle....45-120 in fact,,,,,

I am thinking of heavy barrel in 1-18 twist and 28 inch length...

Action either rolling block or falling block----which action would you
all choose and WHY so?

What about the 28 inch barrel? I figured the 28 inch would keep the
weight about right for N R A match's...Thanks--John[smilie=b:

I understand you can have some clearance problems with rollers and the longer cartridges.

You mean with the sight or what are you saying?

No with the hammer. The hammer does not come back far enough to allow long cases to turn the corner.

45-120's are not noted for their inherent accuracy. I can think of a long list of better (to me ) choices.

John, cartridges of that capacity are best left to the long range matches. Recoil is also a consideration. You want as heavy a barrel as you can get, and get it long. A longer barrel is more conducive to burning all that powder, and I would recomend a 34" spout. As for the action type, definitely a falling block, not a roller. Same reason as stated before, the rollers have too much interference for the big panatellas. The hammer has to be worked down to even get a 45-70 in. Some guys are shooting the 45-90's in silhouette with good succes, but the 45-70's and 40-65's are no strangers to victory either.

Bill

Why not get a 45-90 with a 34” 1/16 twist? If you actually need it to do something it won’t do you can probably rechamber to 45-110 or 45-120 cheaper than you could cut back a 45-120 if you didn’t like it.

If you look at match results, you will probably find few matches are being shot or won with the 45-120.

Good afternoon
I have 3 Rollers. Another factor is the lock time. Rollers are inherantly SLOW lock time. But are they ever SIMPLE ! Beveling the hammer top is no big deal by the way.
Lock time to me would be the most important factor. If I did not just like Rollers I would sell them and get a highwall. But I am hooked....
God Bless you !
