458 SOCOM - What Mold?

Hi all, I have wanted a 458 SOCOM for a loooong time and have finally ordered all the pieces and parts to assemble an AR Pistol in 458 SOCOM.

What molds have you used and what works well? I love NOE Molds, and I think I want a 500 grain mold just because. But please educate me on what works for you.

Hi BNE. For the 458 Socom I have used the following molds with great success. The NOE 350gn I have is plain base and just started to play with plain base gas checks.

Try to find "FullLeadTaco" on youtube. I think he works for NOE and has developed several molds for the 458 SOCOM.

I have been shooting cast in my SOCOM for quite a few years. The two bullets I have settled on as my standard happen to be from NOE.

My primary shooting bullet is the NOE HTC 459-354-FN. It loads and shoots great in my 458. I tried the 300 gr. NOE and my rifle didn't like them as well as the 354.

In the pic below you can see it ready to load (PC'd and GC'd) coming in right at 360 grs. I also use this bullet in my 45-70 and it has also been a great shooter in that as well.

The other NOE bullet I like to shoot in my SOCOM is for heavy/subsonic shooting. It is the NOE HTC459-500-SP. This is a great looking/shooting bullet and also shoots well out of my SOCOM.

Below you can see it coated in PC and also loaded in a case.

The recoil will be brutal in a pistol. I would go as light as possible due to recoil.

It will be in an AR style pistol with the SB style brace. I plan on it being “shoulderable”. Also it will have a 10.5” barrel. My thinking is the recoil will be less than in a 16” barrel. Am I wrong?

Less weight = more recoil. I've shot an AR SBR with 12" and 15" Tromix upper with big scope on top. I noticed that the one with the shorter barrel kicked more using same loads.. If you go any shorter that 12" make sure you have a fast twist barrel to stabilize the heavy bullets.

Interested as well. I've had a 458 socom for a few years, but have been shooting jacketed or brass solids. I finally ordered the stuff to start casting, and an looking for a 300-375gr mold to start making my own plinkers. Looking at the Accurate Molds 46-350S. Thoughts? Gas checks necessary for 1800?

Probably won't get 1800 with the 350's. I was getting 1900-2000 with 2 different 300's, and 1850 with the 325 ftx.

You "can" get 1,800 with a 350gr cast/lead plain base bullet.

But requires powder-coat.
and much lower pressure than the SOCOM's 35K.

Ok, so either powder coat them, or get gas check versions. I understand there can be some issues with clogging gas ports in AR's if your running too soft a bullet or too high a pressure without gas checks as well, beyond the barrel leading issues. I have enough new, I'd rather not get into powder coating for the moment, but I won't dismiss the option entirely.
