Want to pick your brains about loading blackpowder cartridges. I'm a complete newbie to BPCR, so where do I start. I've decided on a cartridge, the 40-60, but that's about all. Any info or advice would be appreciated.

If you had asked a specific question, people would try to answer it. But, your need is for 'general information'.

You would do well to read through a document which shows you the whole process.
It's much more useful (at your stage) than bits and pieces of advice from ten different guys...with ten different ways of doing things.

Try this...

Why the 40-60? I think most will tell you to go with the 45-70 because it is a well known quantity. Best info is at Shiloh Forum.

Any info or advice would be appreciated. You'll need some good references for the loading bench, and the place I would tell you to start is the SPG Black Powder Cartridge Primer, authored by Sterve Garbe and Mike Venturino. Pat Wolf has a number of good books as well. The BPC Primer covers history and BP loading data for many of the old obsolete cartridges. Venturino has written some good hard cover books pertaining to shooting the old Buffalo rifles, and there are a number of other authors who have written reams of paper on the subject. Midway USA carries these books, as does Buffalo Arms and a few other retailers. I'm not going to tell ya what rifle and chambering to get. You can get sucked into this like the rest of us. Be patient, experiment, and have fun. Welcome to the club!

Bill

jnovotny, I sure that you are probably loading for a Winchester '76. I have an original that is a great shooting rifle. Many "EXPERTS" say that this is a puny wimp caliber....BULL. It may be a puny caliber for hunting Bison ,Elephant ,Bear, but for shooting original calibers ...this is a good one to have fun shooting. I have an original mould , and loading tool to load this caliber. If you cannot find suitable bullets ,I could cast you a few. 45/70SS

That's exactly the model, in a copy of course, as I could not ever afford a origanal. I have yet to start shooting anything. Was looking for info on bollit weights and charge weights. Have started to read some of the stuff Montana Charlie turned onto me. Was looking for info in general, thanks alot and keep on letting me pick your brains.

jnovotny, The 40/60 Winchester uses a 210 gr. .403 dia. bullet, you can also use a 215gr. lyman mould 410610. The cases can be made from 45/70 or probably bought from Buffalo arms. As for the charge , I would start with a load of 54gr. 2f Goex or 56gr. Goex cartridge. Loaded case length 2.10 in. 45/70SS
